Sixty seven entries in nine pony racing classes at the Jackson County Fairgrounds kick off the fair’s first day with a 2 p m grandstand race. Six local riders from Jackson County compete, with Dr. and Mrs. Gillespie handling registrations and Marvin Stutz of Greensburg as announcer for the $800 purse event.

Pony races cancelled at Jackson County Fair due to heavy rain
Heavy rain pelting the fair grounds since morning led to cancellation of all pony races this afternoon at the Jackson County Fair. Auto racing remains scheduled for tonight. Entries open for a 22 hour judged trail ride at 8 a.m. Sunday hosted by the Spurs and Wheels Saddle Club.

Smoke Fills Seymour Jail As Two Prisoners Evacuated
At 4 a.m. a jail cellblock filled with smoke forced the evacuation of two inmates in Seymour. James Gill, 36, Bedford, allegedly started a fire in paper. James Collins, 28, Louisville, faces DUI charges and was moved to Brownstown for circuit-court proceedings. Gill was returned to the city jail for city court trial. Police noted the exhaust and AC systems were not working.
