Jackson county's 1968 fair opens with pony racing as the first grandstand feature Saturday at 2 p m followed by auto racing at night. Over 60 ponies are entered across five classes for an 800 dollar purse.
Four youths, including 18-year-olds Earl E. Allman and Robert L. Cross, face theft charges after two local burglaries at Variety Liquor Store and vehicle thefts in the county. Two younger suspects, ages 15 and 14, are charged with juvenile delinquency for theft. Police linked the group to a July 14 liquor-store break‑in and a July 20 car theft, with two unknown youths admitting involvement. The investigation extended over more than two weeks.
Brownstown and Seymour hosts host yellow beetle traps as Indiana and U S Department of Agriculture teams survey Japanese beetle populations. Entomology chief John Favinger says monitoring helps prevent crop quarantine and guides farmer treatments to curb damage to lawns gardens and crops.
More than 700 Air Force Reservists including 14 Seymour men take part in a 15 day active duty training with the 931st Tactical Airlift Group of the 434th Wing at Bakalar AFB near Columbus. The Hoosier Wing with 1500 Reservists from Indiana and nearby states conducts day and night low level flights along contour routes over multiple towns and a combat area drop zone.
The midway at Johnnie's United Shows features a new kid friendly motorcycle ride expected to attract many youngsters at the Jackson County Fair next week. Seymour board of public works rejects two bids over the engineer's estimate for Bush street grading surfacing curbs and drainage from Tipton to Centennial. Cavett Co. bids 14397.25 and Columbus firm 13237.50. Re advertise for bids on Aug 7 and 14 with opening Aug 21 at 7 30 p m.
