Seven of nine Jackson County townships propose higher budgets for 1964 while two keep levies at 1963 rates. Townships will hold hearings Aug 27 to consider budgets and levies, with no increases allowed beyond the proposals. Poor relief funds are not yet allocated.
Brownstown trustees will act on the 1964 budget August 26 showing a 24 cent decrease in the tax levy to 1.79 per 100 assessed valuation raising 52,403 for operating expenses, down from 58,382 this year. The general and street fund splits total 1.79 with 0.97 and 0.82 per 100 respectively. Taxpayers may voice opinions at the meeting and may appeal after levy finalization to the state tax board if grievances remain.
The Board of Public Works and Safety approved roping off area around Hart's Sandwich Shop at Chestnut and Tipton for safety during repairs. The project includes a new front, repainting, interior redecorating, and ceiling lowering as part of storm damage fixes. Claims were authorized for Indiana Telephone, G A Crowder, Public Service, and Seymour National Bank.
The 138th Armor from the Indiana National Guard will train at Camp Grayling Michigan next year after Ft. Knox this summer. Armored units will be detached from most of the 38th Infantry Division as Camp McCoy Wisconsin becomes the 1964 main site. The First and Second Tank Battalions and the Second Reconnaissance Squadron will train at Grayling June 21 to July 5. the rest go to McCoy August 2 to 16. Brig Gen Howard S. Wilcox and state adjutant general John S. Anderson announced the changes at a mid‑training review attended by Sen. Birch Bayh and Indianapolis Mayor Albert Lesche. Capt. Allen B. Dover notes openings in the unit for National Guard enlistments with six months active duty at Ft. Knox.
Miss Gaynelle Moritz reports Seymour downtown parking meters brought 1364 in July up from June yet below July of last year. June totaled 1116.20 with five weeks in July 1962 producing 1522.98. Ticket proceeds rose to 25 in July from 22 in June and 16 in July last year.
The Bundy Brothers firm opened a temporary Medora office after a fire damaged the large Bundy grain mill nearby. Fire crews from Seymour and six volunteer units battled the blaze, which originated in the cob house and burned parts of the complex. A new platform scale will be installed north of the site for harvest season.
A small girl swallowed fly killer in cake form and a 10 year old boy bitten by a snake were among emergency room cases at Schneck Memorial Hospital. Tammie Marshall was treated and released after stomach cleansing at 7 pm. Thomas Boyd received anti venom and was released. Raymond Hicks had a minor finger laceration treated at 6:15 pm. Cindy Hall was admitted with a heel cut at 4:30 pm.
London AP reports Dr. Stephen Ward, 50, in grave condition after throat surgery to ease breathing. Ward remained comatose from an overdose taken amid his Old Bailey trial by jury for living off the prostitution of Christine Keeler Mandy Rice-Davies and other charges.
North Vernon resident Narlon Chester Littell 29 escaped injury after a one car crash near the Bartholomew Decatur county line road and Alert road. Authorities say Littell swerved to avoid Mark Tempest 17 of Westport R2 who entered from the county line, the vehicle struck a utility pole causing 175 dollars in damage.
Auto driven by Layton Sebastian, 22, of 219 Maple Street Austin, escaped injury after a 1955 convertible failed to stop at Moore Street road and struck a utility pole nine miles east of U S 31 on the Crothersville road. The car skidded across the roadway, snapped the pole, and tore down 20 feet of woven wire fencing. Front of the auto was damaged.
A Kentucky motorist had his operator's license suspended for one year and was fined 68.75 dollars after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He also paid 32 dollars in fines and costs for public intoxication in city court before Judge Henry Montgomery. Homer Guy Minor, 56, Falls of Rough, was arrested in the 400 block of West Tipton Street at 3 40 a m after police received a lookout from Sheriff Harvey Green to identify a car matching his description. Total fines and costs for both charges amounted to 100.75 dollars.
