Taxpayers in at least five townships of Jackson County will face higher levies in 1953 as nine township budgets are published. Four townships show increased levies. Brownstown Pershin and Washington budgets will be published later. August 26 hearings set. state board review planned this year.

County Welfare Tax Levy To Be Less In 1953
County taxpayers will pay less for county welfare in 1953 than in 1952 as the state welfare board approves a proposed rate of 10 cents raising about 37 600 in 1953. The 1952 levy is 11 cents raising about 40 300. The final rate will be set by the county council. Next year’s appropriations for old age assistance and aid for dependent children are lower, with old age at 109 200 and dependent children at 27 700 versus 122 800 and 29 000 in 1952. Personal service funds total 15 000 in 1953.

Atterbury Soldier Dies From Automobile Accident Injuries
Cpl Clayton Miner 23 of Essexville Michigan died at Camp Atterbury hospital of injuries from July 25 when a car he rode in ran off U S Route 31 near the Army post and overturned several times. He was a passenger and son of Joseph Miner of Essexville.

Nazarene Assembly Names Darnell Chair and Darnell Elected
The Rev. Leo Darnell, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, was named chairman of the district Sunday School board at the Nazarene Church Assembly in Bloomington Indiana. Mrs Darnell was elected district supervisor of junior work. 14000 Steelworkers to Return in Pittsburgh Pact

UN and Allied forces recapture Old Baldy in Korea fight
The U N and U S forces recaptured Old Baldy hill after an eight hour battle on the Western Front. Allied infantry seized the crest and began fortifying positions as Chinese forces were routed.
