Hancock and Kieffer of Brownstown won the Indiana state highway contract to build a new 600 foot bridge on state road 50 over the VanFange ditch west of Brownstown. Bid was 7 010 39. Construction to start August 10 and finish by October 10 under the firm’s supervision.
As the open season on squirrels begins, Jackson county hunters head afield while warnings stress not harming Shields Park pets or pet squirrels. Officials also urge caution with rabbits and to seek medical advice if fever or signs of illness appear after dressing game.

Jul ian Phillips, 45, shot and killed himself after barricading his home and wounding his wife Mary, 42. Police used tear bombs to breach the house and finally found Phillips dead, leaving the city shaken by the standoff.
The Crothersville Festival and Homecoming starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. for a three day celebration. Brownstown Day is featured, with Judge James A. Cox giving the welcome address. Curtis G. Shake of Vincennes is scheduled to speak at 7 30 p m Friday night. Frank Dailey was listed but cannot attend.
A Dairy Calf Club tour in Jackson County is set for Friday August 9 with visits to club members and a noon basket dinner at Mapleton Farm. Purdue University expert J H Hilton returns to discuss show prep including clipping horn polishing and hoof care. Mrs. Oscar Schmidt aged 42 mother of six died at 424 East Fourth Street after a year long illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 1 30 PM at the home and 2 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. E H Eggers officiating and burial in Lutheran cemetery. Survivors include husband Oscar Schmidt and children Maurice Carl Raph Lois Doris and Helen. sister Della Kleinmeier of Indianapolis. Born August 11 1886 in the county. married 1912. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Louise Amelia De Hostos a 38 year old Porto Rican writer, dejected by life in New York, burned herself to death in the bath tub of her uptown apartment after leaving a note to the Chief of Police blaming a unnamed man. She saturated her clothing with gasoline and ignited it. Her father was a prominent educator with a statue in San Juan.
A blaze at Picatinny arsenal near Dover New Jersey destroyed two buildings and damaged smokeless powder stock with an estimated loss of 135000 dollars. Nine men inside at the time escaped with minor injuries.
