Buffalo Cruiser to Choose Coaling Station Site at Resurrection Bay
The cruiser Buffalo arrived at Seward to survey a site for a government coaling station to be proposed to the secretary of the navy. A reservation of about 2.25 square miles may be made, with survey work lasting ten or twelve days under Capt. Charles F. Bond. The likely area centers on Lowell Point and the bay’s west shore, though an east-side site is possible. The expedition hints at a potential naval yard, and the Buffalo remains on special detail, not attached to a squadron, armed with two 2-inch guns, six 6-pounders, two 6-millimeter Colts, and capable of 14.5 knots.
