Vegetation Thrives in Central Alaska Valleys

Kahiltna Aug 28 reports wild flora thriving in Central Alaska valleys with long sunny days accelerating growth. Seeds sown June 15 show barley mature and beans thriving. Susitna station previously yielded a fine potato crop. Reports of abundant wild berries and birds accompany notes on glacial sediment soils and rich river gravels bearing gold along an eighty mile stretch from Yentna mouth to foothills.

Road survey for Kenai to Alaska Central line planned

Capt Pillsbury of the Alaska road commission requested a preliminary survey for a government road from Kenai to reach the Alaska Central. W A Reel of the Alaska Central engineering corps and Jerome Hatchey sailed to Kenai to start from there. A cable estimate of cost was received and the survey party was detailed. Reel, who recently studied a Hope trail, recommended improving the Johnson Creek trail from Sunrise to the railroad. The Kenai route is expected to follow Tumagain Arm to Hope.

Marines Misused Says Navy Admiral Evans Seeks Protection

Admiral Evans writes that sailors and marines of the North Atlantic fleet were clubbed by police and refused entry to amusements in Portland Maine for wearing naval uniforms. He urges land protections for bluejackets and hopes his command need not visit cities that mistreated them. The notice also reports Alaska prospects and Yukon mining expansions with Guggenheims buying claims and a planned giant hydroelectric system.

Convict Jap Poachers Face Guilty Verdicts at Valdez

Japanese poachers arrested at St. Paul Island pleaded guilty in U S district court at Valdez. Several others were tried and found guilty. One jury hung but the second convicted the men after thirty hours of deliberation. L V Ray of Seward J Y Ostrander and J W Leedy of Valdez defended the Japanese.

Copper development in Prince William Sound

Extensive summer prospecting near Prince William Sound indicates large scale copper deposits on Latouche Island Knight Island and surrounding shores. Mines at Ellamar and along the Kenai belt show copper outcroppings and promising yields with several claims bonded to eastern capital and new tunnels and ledges located by local prospectors.

New Chandler District Created by Judge Wickersham

The Circle City commissioner's district has been split by Judge Wick ersham into the new Chandler district. Samuel L. Marsh is named as the commissioner for Chandler.
