A cable from Quebec reports a bridge collapse led to deaths after Western Union message delays delayed hoisting operation instructions. An inquiry notes operator strikes hindered service and possible defective hoisting gear.
International Vice President Beatty cites near-term settlement on terms favorable to telegraphers. Federation of Labor leader Gompers reports concessions from companies via U S Labor Commissioner Neil. A forty-five delegate committee will meet in New York September 9 to negotiate with company reps. Santa Fe railroad operators may be called out after discovery of management loaning operators to Western Union.
Jeanie faces a heavy fine under license rules as steamer operations are reorganized. McGregor resigns as parser of the Jeanie to pursue business in Southeastern Alaska. The Bertha will haul 500 tons of ore from Latouche Copper Mining Company after the Jeanie's Seattle voyage. Principal owners are George Barrack and James Girdwood. A $20,000 gold dust package was recovered from the Whitehorse river.
Advices from Herschel island report Captain Mikkelsen and his party of explorers have not been heard from since leaving seventy days earlier. Their schooner sank after the crew left to explore northward, and it is believed they are lost. The voyage began from Victoria in the Duchess of Bedford in spring 1906 under royal geography society sponsorship to study Beaufort sea and the continental shelf west of Perry archipelago, with Point Barrow reached in August 1906.
In Bellingham Washington on September five hundred laborers attacked a Hindu settlement aiming to expel Hindus. Rioting persisted through the night and into the morning with Mayor Black calling up fifty extra police. Hindus began leaving town as special police escorted them to boats and tennis venues. Order was restored later.
Lodge Hildreth reports the Pina district has produced significant gold and estimates total output no less than 5 000. He notes Nugget and Poor Man's creeks as the only finds so far and suggests each may yield about 40 000. Two men near Kahiltna river recovered an ounce daily from discovery initiated just before his arrival.
The U S geological survey reports a vast gold and copper bearing belt across eastern Kenai peninsula to the Susitna valley. The bulletin notes copper and gold quartz discoveries near Seward and along the Alaska Central railroad corridor, with potential for extensive mineralization and easier accessibility via rail and steamers for prospectors.
Rioting between union sympathizers and strikebreakers employed by United Railroads in San Francisco left several injured and John Peterson dead at a city hospital. Police reported multiple arrests as the clash escalated around noon.

Led ge runs north northeast toward a large copper zone, with assays sometimes as high as 500 dollars per ton. Discovered by Clayson Pitman Redman and Conner from the Featherbed group, hope to install a stamp mill for quick processing.
Workers along the Alaska Central report sponges and coral found in Day's harbor near Kenai peninsula while rails advance to mile 52 and tunnels near Placer River. L A Peel and Joe Filardeau brought in sponges and noted possible coral growth as tunnel work continues and Camp 49 is abandoned after twenty three months.
Admiral Phili bert reports a fierce engagement with Moorish tribesmen near Casa Blanca as warships open fire driving them back with heavy losses. Reports from Pavis indicate 10,000 Moors ready to attack Casa Blanca with Germany and Great Britain set to assist France and Spain in defense.
Hr. Wesseler and Louis Simpson report a large calcite body west of Bear River about half a mile from mile 6 of the Alaska Central. They located several claims and note the deposit resembles the one found last week at mile 17.
Seattle notes meat prices will advance several cents a pound within two weeks. Officials cite record cattle scarcity on the Pacific coast. The Treadwell mines have paid dividends totaling 11,367,721 dollars to date.
