Cable report from Washington notes that Alaska home rule is unlikely this winter. Senate debate centers on constitutional questions while the House, led by Speaker Joseph Cannon, remains adamantly opposed and aims to keep the measure from a floor vote.
Returns from Kentucky indicate Republicans won the state governorship with A. E. Wilson likely out but a Democratic majority is seen in the legislature due to the last election. Similar reports from elsewhere note Republican governors in Philadelphia and Massachusetts with close races in Baltimore.
In Virginia as of yesterday election on November 6 the Democratic party captured nearly the entire state legislative ticket. Reports from Jackson Mississippi and Omaha Nebraska note Democratic victories, while Cleveland re elected Mayor Tom Johnson by a large margin seen as a rebuke to President Roosevelt. Salt Lake City shows Anti Mormon candidate J S Bransford winning mayoralty by four thousand.
President Roosevelt appoints Silas R. Reid to succeed Judge James Wickersham as judge of the district court for the third judicial division of Alaska. Reid, 38, is an Oklahoma lawyer who ran for Oklahoma attorney general. candidates John Miller of Seattle and Judge Murane of Nome also backed for the Alaska post.
San Francisco voters backed the good government league in a hotly fought election. Dr. B. K. Taylor won the mayoralty by a large plurality over Melyabrol and Ryan, while J. A. Langdon swept the district attorney race for both major parties. The Tammany ticket carried by about 30,000.
Secretary Root announced his retirement from the cabinet due to ill health. The report notes his impending departure will occur in a short time, reflecting a major shift in the administration. The Bristol Bay Fisherman's Union will dispatch delegates to Washington to meet with Secretary Straus of the Interior Department urging abolition of all traps.
The Guggenheims announce abandonment of the Katalla route for their Alaska railroad due to a poor harbor and lack of a breakwater and will base the line at Cordova. M. J. Heney, famed White Pass builder, is contracted to construct the road and move crews north to return twenty miles to operation by year end. Washington notes President Roosevelt will not call an extra session, though he may have partially caused the panic through anti corruption prosecutions.
Telegraph operators in Seattle voted to abandon the strike and return to work. Reports from Chicago New York and other cities indicate the nationwide strike is ended with operators to resume duties. Details of terms remain undisclosed following a secret meeting between union and company representatives.
Officials report Japanese in Hawaii and the Philippines pledging support to the Mikado and plotting insurrection against the United States if war occurs. The issue has been sent to the U S Minister in Tokyo for action.
New York reports government to place funds in banks nationwide to support crop movement. Over forty million dollars in gold ordered from Europe amid money-market stringency. Portland Title Guarantee Trust closed. receiver appointed. New York bankers anticipate settlement of Knickerbockers Trust and other banks as European gold steams in.
In Seattle on Saturday night the city bankers met and agreed the clearing house would issue certificates to all banks today.
New York November 8 the government orders an investigation into all banks that failed during the recent financial panic. If violations of national banking laws are found officials will be prosecuted and imprisoned.
