New York political scene reports Gov. Hughes gains strong backing from state committee and press for the 1908 Republican nomination. Delegation likely to support him despite machine opposition, signaling a coordinated push for the candidate.
Cable reports in The Daily Gateway that Mayor Dunne era police chief Collins and six officers face graft and election fraud charges. The indictment alleges department funds were raised for Dunne’s campaign and that long standing party practices included such acts, with limitations affecting some offenses.
In Madrid on May 10 Queen Victoria gave birth to a boy at 12 45 pm. The queen and child are reported well. The mayor notes the queen nursed the infant herself despite court protests and the royal nurse was discharged.
Seattle May 11 Steamer Portland will sail for Alaska this evening with Bishop Rowe of Alaska aboard en route to Juneau and thence to the Tanana Nome and Point Barrow. The Dora has returned from the west ward after twenty five days away, made several hunter and miner calls, and tied up for bad weather.
May 7 Mount Pleasant reports Birthright and Ridgew wiped out by a cyclone early this morning. Scores killed or dying, houses leveled, crops ruined across a wide farming area. Property losses run into millions. storm sweep described as one of the most destructive in years.
L. L. Masson and Oscar Weber plan to sail from Seattle within a day or two in the small gasoline launch Meteor bound for Knight Island Alaska. The Meteor is smaller than any prior craft attempted to sail to Alaska and will use the inside passage.
The Santa Clara brought coal for the Northwestern and the big vessel is scheduled to sail for Seattle today. She will use the inside passage for safety despite temporary repairs. pilots Capt. Truebridge Capt. Knudsen and Capt. Daniels joined from the Santa Clara.
Furs valued in the thousands were bought at Cook Inlet and Alaska peninsula stations this winter. High value pelts include black and silver gray foxes, with many blue red and cross foxes bear marten lynx otter and other furs reported. On Fidalgo Bay below Ellamar T W Blakney is developing copper property with ore grades 8 to 17 percent and three large bodies in sight. Alaska and Yukon territory have 12000 plant varieties.
Seattle May 9 The steamer Portland arrived from Seward bringing five Japanese sailors picked up from the wreckage of a whaler lost near Kodiak. The men are believed to be the only survivors of the crew.
Dora mail voyage incident reports a Narrow escape as mail clerk Thwaites fell overboard and was saved by W. E. Springston. The first officer and passengers including fur buyer H. C. Hibbard Jr. rode a swamped boat in high surf. They reached shore after a fifteen hour delay and only then could the Dora return.
Seattle May 1 reports a large placer strike on the Innoko river in the Kuskokwim district sparks strong interest among mining men. The steamer Portland from Seward arrived with details, and several parties are outfitting to reach the district when navigation opens.
Reports indicate active work across multiple Knight Island copper claims including Mummy Bay and Snug Harbor. Owners plan a summer development drive as snow recedes with E R Y and E E Hale listing several crews, while Gray, Thompson and O Reilly direct surface ledge prospects and new prospects near water edge.
S W Wible and M H Sullivan, noted Sunrise district miners, travel west on the Bertha to oversee hydraulic properties. Sullivan leads Elmore Mining Company at Six-Mile. Wible owns Canyon Creek property that yielded nearly $20 000 last year. A Brooks monograph on Railway Routes in Alaska notes Lynn Canal as deep but stormy, Resurrection Bay as nearly ideal, and Yakutat and Controller bays offering vessel protection.
Steamer Santa Clara reached port at midnight and headed west at 6 45 this morning. She carried twenty six passengers to Seward and 92 tons of freight including 28 370 feet of bridge timber for the railroad. About a dozen passengers departed Seward for the inlet as Alaska exported 30 tons of gold and 4 tons of coal in 1906. Refined copper remains near 25 0 cents in the market.
Secretary Taft refuses the steam shovel workers rise in wages saying Alaska pay for similar work is higher and canal workers would year round but with six months of work. The report cites a cable from The Daily Gateway.
Steamers in Seattle are being loaded today by non union men. No serious trouble has occurred though bad feeling exists among union longshoremen despite the activity.
May 7 steamship concerns adopt the open shop for longshoremen and will hire any applicant regardless of union status. May 10 Negros arrive from Everett to load ships here, with fears of trouble as wage demands take effect May 15.
Seattle reports Jeanie scheduled to sail Saturday evening and Saratoga booked for Saturday instead of today. The Valdez Prospector notes J L Steel transported forty tons of supplies to Landlock Bay for Standard Copper Company. A tram installed last fall was disabled and work paused for winter. Olympia lay at Uyak with cannery supplies when Dora arrived.
The Northern Pacific North Coast Limited, loaded with passengers and $100,000, was robbed fifteen miles east of Butte at 4 a.m. Two masked men fled after a fight. engineer Clow was killed and the fireman wounded. robbers escaped with no loot. A posse tracked them. later two suspects were arrested in Helena as trail went cold.
Col Richard Thompson succeeds Lieut Col Gif ford as head of the Seattle cable office. Transfer completed and Thompson will be in charge Monday. He declines to suggest any changes at present.
