Puter Escapes Custody In Oregon Fraud Case

Puter, convicted with Horace G. McKinley in a land warrant fraud scheme, briefly seized by a guard but recaptured. They had been promised immunity in exchange for testimony against Oregon politicians and fled bonds. They disappeared toward the Orient after the frauds yielded thousands in the Middle West. Andrew Nisbet and W. G. Jack head to Crow Creek to resume mining operations once equipment arrives.

Purser Named for Excelsior as Be and R Lockhart Moves

Be and R Lockhart formerly local agent for Northwestern Steamship Company and freight clerk of the Oregon are now appointed purser of the Excelsior. This marks Lockhart’s latest move after stints with prior carriers and agents.

Wrangel Fire Wipes Out Town. No Lives Lost

Wrangel was practically wiped out by fire yesterday isolating the community. A Lynn Canal steamer carried the news this morning. Tuneau and nearby towns sent provisions and shelter materials by tugs and vessels accepting aid. No fatalities reported.

Portland Man Plans Bee Farm Near Alaska Arctic Zone

Morrell E. N., a Portland bee expert, intends to ship bee swarms to Seward Alaska then move inland to the Tanana region to establish a small honey farm. He has years of experience and believes wild bees will thrive near the Arctic, with rail progress aiding access.

Col Boyle Locates in Seward for Jewelry Business

Col A R Boyle, father of Dr F M Boyle and owner of Owl Drug Co in Valdez and Seward, arrives aboard the Excelsior to locate and open a jewelry shop. He will move into the Bank of Seward’s current room after the bank relocates. He is from Dover Delaware, long Civil War era colonel of the First Delaware Regiment, leaving due to heat.

H Ruhe sailed the Farallon from Juneau to close his business and plans to return to Seward to settle permanently. G Herning also sailed the Farallon to Seattle to purchase stock for his Knik store and will return as soon as possible.

Nelson blocks Alaska bills over Wickersham case

Washington March 26 Senator Nelson halts all Alaska legislation until the Wickersham confirmation is decided. He threatens to kill the Alaska delegate bill and the Third Judicial District bill if Wickersham is approved. If passed, the latter creates an extra judge, district attorney, marshal and other posts.

Caswell to Pilot Alaska Run From Seattle March
