Northwestern Runs on Latouche Reef Near Valdez
Steamer Northwestern ran onto a reef 400 feet from Beatson’s wharf at Latouche, tearing a bow hole and flooding forward compartments. Passengers were taken to Valdez aboard the Port land, which stood by. Captain Truebridge hopes to beach and save the vessel with aid from Santa Clara, but high seas threaten further damage. The ship, carrying 275 tons for Latouche and Valdez, sailed from Seward for Seattle last Monday, with a total crew and cargo, including Alaska Central iron, at stake due to lapsed insurance. Built in 1889 at Chester, she is the largest boat on the Southern Alaska run, formerly the Orizaba on the Atlantic, and brought to the Pacific in 1906 by the Northwestern Steamship Company.
