San Francisco June 29 telegraph operators demand reinstatement. If firms refuse to rehire they will order a general strike of operators nationwide tonight or tomorrow. The situation remains unchanged this afternoon per The Daily Gateway dispatch.
Special to The Daily Gateway Sunrise June 11 A jib and mainsail sloop struggled toward the mouth of Six Mile Creek against a strong head tide and fouled rocks. The boat disappeared with visible mast and possible crew clinging to mast and bowsprit. Eyewitness J H Brown Low could not assist as no boat was available. A roll of bedding found later by Nels Anderson and Edwin Crawford bore a World Almanac with the name A Kelly, but no further id of the men or vessel.
John Kelly, in Seward, denies that anyone was drowned in the sloop wreck near Sunrise or that he has ever died. He says he, and three companions, were not in the sloop when it went on the rocks and that the flotsam bearing his name proves the boat wreck occurred at Sunrise. Capt. Armstrong seeks more funds for Sunrise Trail work, estimating costly stretches at heavy rates.
The crew of the steamer Ohio mutinied yesterday attempting to seize the ship and escape. Officers of the Thetis arrested five leaders and jailed them, ending the mutiny. In Russia, peasants burned vast estates near Tula as anger over the dissolution of the Douma sparked widespread arson, causing millions in losses.
A Pacific Steam Navigation Co steamer, sailing between Panama and South America, was wrecked in a heavy squall fifty miles at sea. About fifty lives were lost with only one passenger and one officer saved. The two survivors were rescued by a passing steamer and arrived here today with the tale.
Billings Montana June 25 A cloudburst caused severe floods this morning with five Stillwater railroad bridges washed out tying up service. Numerous houses were destroyed and all crops in the vicinity suffered. Property loss is estimated at 100000 dollars.
Two Kodiak miners accused of rape were defended on preliminary exami nation by Congressman W. E. Humphrey of Seattle and Emerson Hough. The complaint was dismissed on motion by Deputy Marshal W. W. Bowers. The hearing was not sensational with little testimony and the miners were said to be compensated with gold nuggets.
The Lisbon riot clash between soldiers and mobs leaves at least 100 dead and 600 wounded. Cavalry charged crowds as women hurled scalding water from upper floors. The crisis follows the king’s dissolution of parliament and a democratic wave threatening King Carlos.
Secretary Taft declares the looming Panama canal disruption a dream and says the entire construction may be awarded on private contracts. He notes no change in the commission and downplays the forecasted shakeup from Washington.

Judge Aldrich in the state court today appointed a master in chancery to conduct an inquiry into the mental condition of Mrs Mary Baker Eddy the Christian Science leader The rule was made in pursuance of the suit for the control of the church property.
Seattle June 25 Delegate Thomas Cale of Alaska arrived en route to Alaska from the east. He forecasts President Roosevelt will urge territorial government in his annual message and doubts Gov Hoggatt sways the president. Cale plans to sail soon and spend the summer in Alaska.
Vancouver June 28 United States customs officials retaliate against Canadian action discriminating against American cattle. Skagway shipments of Canadian cattle to the interior are denied entry unless accompanied by inspection certificates proving soundness and health of the animals.
Congressman William E. Humphrey of Seattle and Mrs. Humphrey passed through Seward on the steamer Portland from Kodiak. He spent time with local and Seattle acquaintances, hunted and studied game conditions, and planned to push a new bill to amend Alaska game law in the next Congress.
The Alaska Central tracklayers laid 2000 feet of track this week extending the terminus across the Howe tross over the glacier stream on mile 50 and up to a short trestle over a gulch. Work on this trestle will pause for a few days and the next jump will be 2900 feet to a bridge at mile 50 end.
Judge Wickersham fixed July 20 as the date for convening the summer term of the United States district court at Valdez. It will be decided within two days whether it will be a jury term. The call must be issued thirty days before the first day of the term, which will be next Saturday, June 29.
