Far in advance of construction, trails cut by crews ease transport of personnel and supplies for locating and grading the line. Old routes are used where possible, new shortcuts added, benefiting prospectors heading toward the Yentna district and interior regions.
P Welch & Co secure a contract to build thirty miles along Turnagain Arm from mile 75 to 105. Martin Welch, after Seattle talks, expects to mobilize 2000 workers next spring once Cook Inlet shipping resumes inflow. They plan to field ready crews early and push the full length of the project through the summer.
Gen Greely chief signal officer sent to the secretary of war a recommendation to refuse the Amen Telegraph Cable Company bid to lease the Alaska cable and land telegraph lines. Secretary Taft expected to join in disapproval. Opposition comes from Alaska and Seattle with heavy business reliance on the lines.
Alaska's agricultural potential is rising with $5,237 worth of implements shipped in the last fiscal year. Wheat barley oats and hay are harvested locally while strawberries cauliflower and other crops are cultivated. Four agricultural experiment stations operate Sitka Kenai Copper Center and Rampart testing grasses, dairying, and grains. Dairying is promising due to abundant grasses, with potential settlements on Kodiak and the mainland. Rampart hosts a marten farm, and Captain Blodgett builds a steamer at Seldovia to serve summer runs as river traffic is expected to increase.
A citizens meeting in Seward formed a five member fire protection board. Three chamber fire committee members joined the board, with W A McNeiley, H N Coleman and C E Brown serving as initial members. New chiefs were named for brigades and a volunteer department planned with extensive apparatus and a dedicated fire station site near Fourth avenue and Adams street.

Senator Nelson introduces a Senate resolution to codify Alaska laws and decisions and print them. Roosevelt backs railroad aid legislation with federal bond interest guarantees.
Reports from Skagway and local papers recount frequent petty annoyances by Canadian customs at the summit across the White Pass border. Travelers claim duties on almost anything crossed into Canada deter interior travel and push some toward Valdez, Seward, or Yukon routes. John Noot, the customs officer, is said to follow orders from Yukon’s E. S. Busby to collect duties on all items, even a sandwich or new shoes, prompting criticism from miners and travelers alike.
Washington reports Nelson of Minnesota leads opposition to Judge Wickersham of Alaska for another term. The Senate subcommittee convened to probe charges, with Nelson Carter and Pettus, presenting charts on gambling saloons near Fairbanks. Wickersham defends division of the Third district. President may seek Wickersham appearance. confirmation expected despite opposition.
Maj John E Balline states in an interview that the Alaska Central Railway will seek business across all coast cities not just Seattle, emphasizing regional benefit and outward trade to maximize gains for the company and Alaska. Capt W D Geiger forms a Nome capital backed firm to run Kuskokwim river trade as Steamer Quickstep undergoes Nome repairs for spring service. The Kuskokwim river is navigable for 1000 miles.
A discovery of a large ledge grade copper ore is reported at Knight's Island by C partners. The find is described as notable and the site is being explored for potential mining prospects.
Seattle dispatch reports the steamship Oregon arrived from Ella Mar in four days and one hour, a record run for that port. The Oregon left Ellamar January 11 after delays from reef strikes, with a later loading inspection finding no visible damage. Oregon scheduled to sail for Seward next week per Seattle office.
