Cable into Ketchikan now open for business
The cable extension into Ketchikan opened for business Wednesday. Notice came over the wire to Operator McGuire that day. This puts every important town in Alaska on the tele graphic wire. Operator McGuire has received notice of the following cable rates from Seward to the towns on the new extension: Wrangel 19 cents per word Hadley 24 cents Ketchikan 25 cents. The 40-horse power air compressor for the Ready Bullion copper mine on Lynx creek is being moved up to the mine over the snow. It was brought in last fall by O. H. Sleeper, president of the company, and landed at Sunrise. The task of moving it up to the mine is a heavy one. When the compressor is installed work will be pushed rapidly on the tunnel which is being run to cross-ex the ledge. This tunnel is now in 800 feet and several hundred feet more are required to reach the ledge. Nate White, superintendent of the mine, is now in Seward. The attorney-general department has secured indictments against a large number of railroads and shippers for rebating, besides those already convicted. Poultry raisers in the suburbs of Portland complain that rock blasting in the vicinity blasts the reproductive qualities of eggs.
