The district court in Seward gains a clerk’s office with a deputy. Judge Wickersham appointed Mrs Myra Cox of Seward as deputy effective today. A spring term will appoint a permanent clerk. Seward attorneys supported the temporary appointment.
Chairman Sprickett outlines a call for a convention to elect Alaska delegates to the national Republican meeting with primaries in September and a territorial convention in November. Reynolds Alaska Company plans a large Latouche smelter, with W. Austin assessing sites, aiming to mine ore to feed a thousand ton daily capacity.
Sulzer of New York visits Alaska and Yukon on a push for territorial status at the next Congress session. He prepared a bill to be introduced by Delegate Cale. Last night Sulzer was hosted by the Fagles. Cale attended as a prominent guest.
A dispute over the first American flag hoisted in Alaska heads to court after George Rodman of Wrangell deposited the flag with the Dexter Horton bank in Seattle. Edward Ludecke, another Alaskan, claims ownership and demanded its return, but the bank recognizes only Rodman as the custody holder.
Secretary of Agriculture Wilson visits Seattle to study forest reserves and foresees Alaska becoming wealthier through agriculture. He praises Alaska wheat as the finest he has seen and says northern wealth will surpass gold with farming development.
Rumor says Conner will replace Pharo as general freight and traffic manager of the Pacific Coast Company after Aug. 2. Supposed successor for Alaska Coast is James E ro, with Conner possibly taking the role. John St. Bradley arrives bound for Antarctic with John R. Bradley and Dr. Frederick A. Cook.
Prospectors search for the big diamond vein at Sand Point on Popoft island in the Shumagin group. Louis Herman is principal owner with outside capitalists offering $300 000 cash, rest in a year, for the mine while owners seek a larger payment. L. Bales notes the ledge as a major northern mining proposition amid Alaska prospects.
The Reynolds Alaska Company has acquired 93 percent of the Alaska Coast Steamship Company and will add a fast new steamer to run to Seward or Valdez while the existing fleet stays on the inside route. A copper ledge at Sunny Bay near Resursection Bay shows high grade chalcopyrite. locators Will Clayson E F Pitman and A C Gould report favorable surface indications for a sizable ore body. An opposition town Carbon Center is forming near Katalla with saloon licensees and buildings rising near the railroad terminal, while Wrangell plans a Graveyard Creek water works project.
Judge Wickersham rules for defendants in a suit by a former wife of Harry Elliott seeking a half interest in Hubbard Elliott copper property on the Kotsina river. The case cites a crub stake agreement from early Alaska dealings. the estate is valued in the millions. Guggenheim interests are suspected of instigating the suit. The Yukon Alaska Gold Dredging Company plans dredges on 8000 acres of Stewart river placer ground.
A high grade chalcopyrite copper vein at Porcupine bay near Resurrection bay, eight miles from Seward, discovered by S. F Likes. The ledge runs fifteen to twenty feet wide and extends near an immense titanic iron body. Officials note possible bonanza, with ore body likely substantial though full details are pending.
W L Redman brought quartz specimens rich in gold from Spruce Creek near Resurrection Bay to Seward. The ledge runs about two thousand feet with a ten foot wide vein of chalcopyrite and rich ore shoots. Reynolds Alaska Co plans tests and development funding for the copper property on Porcupine Bay.
The government has let a contract for transmission towers to be installed in Asaka. Towers will be manufactured by the United States Steel Corporation. A coast to coast chain is planned along the Atlantic Gulf and Pacific coasts.
Valdez August and Owura of Se ward relieved when S M Graff was acquitted after a fifteen minute jury deliberation. Prosecutor Scott had two other indictments dismissed this morning. In a separate note L L Bales found a large sulphur deposit on the Alaska peninsula during spring bear hunting, describing its good grade and potential value.
J. S. Antonelle, a Seward contractor, wins a major tunnel project on Latouche Island for the Reynolds Alaska Company and will hire about seventy five men. Copper claim owners in the Copper river valley celebrate deeper ore ledges. A Valdez pack train carries rich ore from the Hubbard Elliott property at the 150 foot level on the Kotsina.
A petition to Seward residents, already signed by transportation firms, urges the government to build a lighthouse at the entrance to Station Bay. Alaska Central Railroad officials lead the effort, with Captain Ross slated to arrive soon to study the proposal. Resurrection Bay is a safe harbor, but a lighthouse would aid expanding commerce.
Seattle Aug 3 W H Isom of the North American Trading and Transportation Company denies rumors that Guggenheim interests have secured control of the firm. reports also mention Charles E Peabody of Alaska Steamship Company as a possible manager. Steamer MacArthur, a coast survey vessel, arrived to chart the coast and take soundings toward Illamna bay. Government plans five new native schools in Alaska at Golovin Bay Sinook Port Clarence near Rampart Yukon Little Diomede. Three Seldovia prospectors arrived with fine bornite ore from Cook Inlet. Prospector Baer reports finding asbestos in Susitna valley.
