Contemptible campaign trick taints circular mailed in 1908
A dubious circular purporting to defend personal liberty was mailed from Davenport to temperance supporters in the third district. Handwriting matches Elliott, but investigators find Ludwig Schwartz and the Personal Liberty League of America nonexistent. Telegram from H P Adler condemns the stunt as a fake political trick designed to sway votes for Pickett, revealing broad dissemination to opponents of liquor sales. A harsh verdict labels Elliott unfit for public trust. the piece also notes Eugene Walters’ Paid in Full thriving in New York and Chicago, with a forthcoming Syndicate Theatre engagement on November 6.
