Cummins Denies 1889 1891 Backing Amidster Claims
The Des Moines controversy centers on Gov. Cummins denial of supporting Horace Boies in 1889 and 1891. Witnesses including James Downey dispute the denial, citing 1901 Des Moines encounters and reports from the Des Moines Leader and News. Authorities note previous independent Republican ties and a 1888 Polk county voters address endorsing Democrats, with Cummins’ actions tied to political expediency.
