Joint conference of miners and operators adjourns without wage scale

In Indianapolis the second joint conference of canal operators and miners of the central district ends after tabling miners demands for a wage scale. The vote on adopting the scale fails. the matter is referred to the joint scale committee for consideration with meetings set for tomorrow. Two-Cent Fare Bill Dead in Des Moines Committee

Des Moines March 24 The house committee on railroads and commerce voted to kill the two cent fare bill. Prominent railroad men including F P Nustis of the Burlington and Merry of the Illinois Central spoke against the measure. Representative Sankey argued in favor. The bill proposed a maximum two cent rate on all railroads in the state, but critics said reductions would hurt railroads or raise fares on express lines. Horse Tangles on Trestle Delays Trains Near Richmond

A horse on the Pennsylvania right of way sixteen miles east of Richmond attempted to cross a high trestle and fell between ties. The engineer applied air brakes and stopped within yards of the trestle. After ten hours and a wrecking crew, the horse was removed with ropes and tackle and was not seriously injured.

Senate Passes Pension Bill as Fortifications Measure Advances

In under twenty minutes the Senate approved a 140,000,000 pension appropriation. The railroad rate bill was set aside for the day while fortifications appropriations moved forward, Philippine fortifications dropped. An executive session followed. In the House, members studied the legislative appropriation bill with a microscope, five and a half hours spent on amendments and only about 25 pages finished, with many petty official salary increases stripped.
