Supreme court setback on Waterloo railway tax levy
The Waterloo Cedar Falls and Northern Railway faces a tax dispute after the Iowa Supreme Court reversed a lower court injunction, granting the state executive council power to levy taxes for 1908 and triggering possible collection of around 10 500 for three years. The case hinges on whether the executive council or city assessors have authority to set levies, with implications for about 37.71 miles of road and an assessed value near 877 000. The court ruling pauses collection until final action, and action may target the county for the owed taxes.
