A cloudburst last night in Lincoln caused property losses in the thousands with water two feet deep in business streets. The storm was described as the heaviest ever known in the vicinity, impacting Latcols and surrounding areas.
President Roosevelt named a new Isthmian canal commission after the senate failed to confirm the prior panel. Members include Theodore P. Shantz as chairman, John F. Stevens, Governor Magoon, Brig. General Haines (retired), Mordecai Endicott, and Benjamin M. Harrod. Stevens succeeds Brig. Gen. Ernst and remains chief engineer.
In Kansas City on July 2 final steps in rebate cases occurred as appeal bonds were perfected for seven convicted individuals. Bills of exception were filed in a Panama Canal bonds matter. Secretary Bhaw offered thirty million dollars in bonds authorized by Congress. Bonds bear 2 percent interest, dated August 1908, redeemable after ten years, payable thirty years from issue.

Glibertville plans a July 2 celebration with a morning grove gathering near the church, a Jubilee band led parade, Washburn vs Gil bertville baseball, all day dancing under a waterproof tent, meals at Mrs Miller's and stands, fireworks at dusk, afternoon races, and Rock Island train No 19 offering midnight service home to Waterloo.
Injured passengers from the American line wreck near Salisbury England are improving except for B W Sentel of Brooklyn and Miss Margaret Rask of England who are in dangerous condition. Miss Rask had both legs amputated. An inquest will begin this afternoon with formal evidence before adjournment. Bodies of the dead remain in the station.
Secretary Wilson will not initiate rationing until organization is ready to implement the meat inspection law. He stated the new bill will supply the department with an adequate system and funds to enforce inspections. The program will extend supervision from pasture to package, assuring consumers at home and abroad can use Our Meats in confidence.

On the west side a committee doubled two five hundred dollar subscriptions to the list, bringing the total to eleven for West Waterloo. Many prospects remain to be called, with a strong chance of raising twenty five hundred dollars on that side alone. Miss Stella Fisher daughter of Major and Mrs Fisher of 1025 Mulberry street was badly injured in a Saturday night runaway. She suffered a dislocation and two fractures of the lower jaw along with multiple cuts and bruises after traveling with a camp party on the Cedar river. She was treated at her brother Fred Fisher’s home and later rested at her home on Mulberry street. Doctors warned kidneys and overall health may suffer without kidney aid and urged Dean's Kidney Pills as a remedy, with testimonials from Mrs John Eicher of 1420 Commercial Street.
AR Ferguson suffered three rib fractures and multiple bruises after colliding with an oncoming car while riding behind a moving streetcar. He will be laid up at his Harrison Street home for several days. He is a member of Ferguson Bros. tile manufacturers, based below the Rath Packing plant.
Engineer Jones was hurt Saturday night while alighting from his engine in the Waterloo round house. He slipped from the cab step and was thrown back against the platform, sustaining painful injuries to his back and was unable to continue work. He was reported better Sunday and able to be out.
Ten ballots in Webster Iowa July 2 fail to break a deadlock in the seventh senatorial district convention. The vote tally shows Chase Hamilton 17, Peterson Wright 15, Ward Hardin on each ballot. Resolutions endorse Roosevelt Cummins Allt 808 and Dolliger.
In Clear Lake Iowa President McNider of First National Bank and treasurer of Modern Woodmen of America served as a street car conductor Sunday when a strike hit the Mason City and Clear Lake Interurban line. General Superintendent Hanlon acted as motorman. The walkout tied up service for several hours before settlement.
A fire at Tom Barker’s feed barn on East Sixth street destroyed the barn and killed or injured many horses. The blaze started about 2:30 pm with flames enveloping the one story frame structure amid surrounding outbuildings. Firefighters and volunteers rescued some animals, but at least twelve horses died or were killed to end their suffering. others were saved or removed to safety. Losses were heavy for farmers including W. B. Loveland and Nick Wellman. The incident remains under investigation with emergency crews aided by local residents.
