A naked woman named Helen Brauer, 33, directed by a man, attempted to set a hallway blaze in a five story tenement. The man escaped. she was captured and taken to Bellevue hospital. Fire caused no major damage.
A fire at the Erstine Reed boarding house on Missouri Avenue in St Louis killed three women including Jewel Reed who died rescuing others and severely injured an elderly woman who jumped from a window. One boarder, Kris Hilger, aged 70, suffered injuries. In Des Moines a druggist testified in the trial of Mrs Tosiah Pratt accused of murdering her husband, noting arsenic was bought prior to the death.
In Lexington, Sarah Williams, a Black woman, admitted to a confession in circuit court for abducting and killing Carrie Taylor, a white woman, earning a life sentence. The dispute centers on attempts to reinstate a war department clerk and alleged family turmoil following the father’s death.
In a Pueblo Colorado probate dispute Mrs Morris alleges her brother did not file a codicil to their father’s will. The executor, Horton Pope, says the codicil was found separately and properly filed. court records show the executor discharged duties. The row centers on care for their father and a contested $10 weekly allowance. The case reflects family strife and calls for patience from the public.
