Knute Nelson born in Norway on February 2 1843 and brought to the United States at age six. He later settled in Minnesota after Civil War service, studied law, served in Wisconsin and Minnesota legislatures, became county attorney of Douglas County, was elected governor of Minnesota and later United States senator now serving his third term.

The Rev Henry Wilmot of East Rome Baptist Church has been convicted of embezzling church funds. He was sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary after raising a large sum to rebuild the church then leaving for Chicago to solicit a wealthy layman for aid.
