Fires around Wellsburg Eckerman and nearby towns are largely controlled after burning extensive areas. Eckerman’s business district suffered major destruction for about two weeks with many homes affected. Fires remain active but pose no immediate danger to residents.
George Wright of New London suffered a stroke of paralysis after a church quarrel over distributing a colored picture fan. Wright, a Friends church member, angered by women’s objections to the fan’s depicting a child, saw the fans collected and destroyed, then fell ill with paralysis.

Asland Mo Aug 2 Jobo Harris a longtime cashier at the Bass Johnston Banking company confessed to a shortage of 3400 dollars. He made restitution and resigned. Bank officials and citizens oppose prosecution though state officials may pursue charges for falsifying accounts. Harris says he took the money to support his family and intended to repay, but was prevented.
A white pony, bought in Columbus, Nebraska, by W. K. Lay, escaped from its new owner in Council Bluffs andjourneyed 94 miles back to its old home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, traveling through Omaha Wednesday morning in a muddy gallop before arriving at noon yesterday.
Milwaukee August 2 A fish fault from a perch caught at the government pier caused the death of Harry J Bichter who had suffered a fifteen year illness. While washing one of his catches the fish's fin stuck into him and led to poisoning and death.
Fifteen swimmers sought shelter under a tree near Lebanon Indiana when lightning struck the tree. Occle Rice, 14, died, and the others were knocked down and seriously shocked. In Decatur Illinois W M Stubblefield of Oran sold the stallion Blacklock for ten thousand dollars to K Billings of Chicago after a 2 01% mile tryout at Davenport.
