A large Union church audience heard J. H. Funk of Iowa Falls praise his Republican record and denounce bolters allied with the Albrook ring. The event showcased tensions within Hardin county politics as Funk urged loyalty to the party nominees while bolters campaigned separately.
Attorneys Williams of Radcliffe and Weaver of Iowa Falls, plus deputy clerk Burlingame, all recently renounced bachelorhood, honored the Hardin county bar at Hotel Winchester Eldora. An order from the district court summoned the members, editors, and guests to attend at 8 p.m. Tuesday Oct 20 1903. The Herald will report the banquet in a future issue.
Eldora Ladies Aid society met October 15 1903 in council rooms at 3 pm. Officers elected: A S Howell president I B Gould vice president C J Wertchow treasurer A W Mitterer secretary. Committees named for wards to solicit. meetings set for October 24 at 3 pm. Members urged donations and subscriptions. thanks given to supporters.
The Epworth League devotional meeting is set for next Sunday evening with Clvng Bighteaviness and Saline Wea McDonald listed as participants. The pastor will discuss The Hunter's Folly and attendees are asked to bring their bibles to Thursday prayer meeting. October memory verses are Ephesians 2:8-9. Mary Jennings of N Yamhill Oregon endorses Rocky Mountain Tea marketing. Dr G A Stewart dentist advertises services nearby.
The Herald reports on court in session, fall weather, and local notices. Weddings at the Industrial school, large invitation lists, and election day two weeks away. Photographer R V Adams upgrades his studio. Mrs Porter seriously ill after another paralytic stroke. hopes of recovery. J J Funk recalls serving in an Illinois regiment during the Civil War.
The Eldora Herald notes C. I. Stauffer hardware hosts a daily Majestic range exhibition with biscuits and butter free. Sam Walker moves his family into the Devo residence after purchasing it and transfers feed shed interests to Chas and Frank. Henry Wilts faces a year at Independence hospital after a dipsomania charge before Judge Evans. The editor admits modest shortcomings due to being off his feet since Monday. Rev Crnzer has not decided on the Congregational pastorate, but hopes linger. Spiot Noble of Iowa College preaches at the church. Congressman Birdsall plans a Hardin county GOP address at Union Thursday evening with expected large turnout.
Ackley and Eldora to Union on Thursday evening Oct 21 for a special Iowa Central train. Depart Eldora at 7 with 45 cent round trip fare. stops at Abbott Crossing and Abbott to pick up attendees. Bands will accompany. Union expected to be lively as Hardin county Republicans attend to hear Hon B P Birdsall.
Edwin O. Soule, alleged defaulter, faced a closed preliminary hearing before Justice Walter L. Weaver in Iowa Falls. Bond set at 20,000. Soule remained jailed in Eldora after failing to post. Grand jury will investigate. estimated loss ranges from 29,000 to 35,000 with final figures pending district court trial.
The young people's society hosted a harvest home concert at the church Sunday evening. The program featured Sabbath school children and ended with a silver collection. Also noted are disputed war records of D. H. Funk, a restaurant and bakery deal involving L. B. Logan, and a Netsworth gallery item about Blydenburgh and Muff in New York and Chicago papers.
The Hardin district court convened Monday at 9:00 with Judge W D Evans presiding. Three weeks promise a large docket though only one case was tried Monday, Daniel Spurlin et al vs Thos H Hauser et al, a boundary dispute. The grand jury convened Tuesday with Steve Burke bailiff and Carl Newcomer clerk. indictments expected soon. Prisoners awaiting grand jury action numbered four.

Blydenburgh, alleged in an EB. 8 Blydenburgh murder case, had bond expire Saturday at 6 o'clock and was jailed after a bond man refused further surety. He remained in county jail as grand jury sessions began, awaiting possible indictment at the current term. Public opinion is deeply divided on his guilt or innocence.
Henry W. Reinhart and Minnie Fischer and John S. Bussard and Marie Bonefiel are recorded as licensed to wed in a public marriage notice, indicating valid licenses issued for their nuptials.
Dr B. E. Purcell, practicing limited to eye, ear, nose and throat, at Emergency Hospital on October 6 and October 20.
Secretary L M Shaw of the United States treasury is sent to Mardin county where the race between Mark J Furry the republican nominee and William Welden the bolting wing candidate has grown bitter. Chair man R H Spence states only regularly nominated republicans are recognized by the committee and Iowa Falls republicans asked for non intervention. Other speakers include Tron M L Semple of Osceola and more. Exact date and meeting place not yet fixed.
The tenth grade held a meeting Tuesday in Kansas City while Nat Hardin was elected captain of the basketball team. The girls’ team, visiting New Providence Saturday, were defeated 24 to unknown score, with Josephine Gilman captain and Marguerite Miles as basketwoman, Lela Smith, Virgine Taas guards, Marie Rogers and Louise New centers, Clarvey Slack referee.
