Successful Spelling Contest Lets County Pupils Shine
The first Hardin county spelling contest was held in the court room Saturday with about 60 children and 35 to 40 teachers present. Fifteen townships represented. Eldora, Clay and Sherman did not attend. Seniors spelled 300 words, juniors 250. Winners: seniors Emma Roll and Mary Huffman. juniors Wendell Clampitt and Gladys Walton. Prizes given by Miss Scurry. refreshments served after.

Kingaley Native Doak Veteran of Civil War Dies
Wm. Doak, formerly of Hardin county, died at his Kingaley home May 20, 1909. He enlisted with Co. EB 15th Ohio Infantry at war start, re-enlisted Jan 1, 1864, was wounded thrice at Stone River, Chickamauga, and Nashville. He moved to Grundy county in 1871, served two terms as county treasurer, and was buried in Eldora Cemetery Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. W. E. Stanley officiating.
