Four days of local field notes and county news from Hardin County appear in this issue. Items include church collections for Finland, marriage invitations, a new baby, millinery notices, a paint of coal hopes, and updates on local officials, schools, and social events.
Dr B EB Purcell, practicing eye ear nose and throat medicine, appears at Emergency Hospital on March 10 and March 24.
President Roosevelt writes to Hon. David J. Henderson congratulating him on Congress 1903 achievements and noting regrets over unacted measures while praising Henderson’s leadership in the House. The letter acknowledges the congress’s public good and wishes Henderson well for the future.
Mrs. Stanley and Misses Mary Frey and Jennie McNitt hosted a reception on Tuesday afternoon March 24 at the Frey home for the Baptist church ladies and congregation. Officers elected for the coming year included President W. E. Stanley, Vice President Mary Smith, Secretary Jennie McNitt, and Treasurer Mary Icey. A musical program featured duets, solos, a trio, and a double quartet performance, followed by refreshments. Also, a note mentions a few loads of cobs for sale.
The ninth grade held a party at A. W. Rumbo’s home on Thursday evening, March 3. Chas Rumbo and Mellyne Shefield hosted the event. Theo Gunther won a prize of bonbons, while John Fowler received the booby prize, a doll. Refreshments followed as blue and old gold decorations graced the rooms.
A large Wisner audience enjoyed the first class farce Are You a Mason? with strong company talent and visible Masonic support. Notables like Mamie Johnston and Paul Weigel drew praise, while the show’s director Gilman received commendations for Wisner staging and plans for future Ironman performances. In school display coverage, Miss Scurry and Miss Brown’s rooms impressed visitors with Washington and Lincoln themed crafts, color, and skilled paper cutting.
Marriage licenses issued for Paul Bahr and Mary Smack Henny Wabbena and Diana Ottman Jno Frisbie and Emma Kinsey. Also reports a new shipment of buckwheat flour received at the Iowa Central Elevator.
Emma Louise Winsey daughter of Mrs U K Mcfarland and John J Frisbie son of Mrs Alice Frisbie were married Thursday at the residence of U K McFarland. Rev W E Stanley officiated in the First Baptist Church of this city. A fine supper followed and gifts honored the couple. Guests from Cambridge were Mr and Mrs KE Sanquest and Earl Kinsey. The couple will reside in Eldora.
The Grinnell male quartet with violin and piano soloist will give a popular music concert at the Congregational church on Wednesday, March 8 at 8 o'clock. Advertisers promise a high quality program with quartet numbers, tenor and bass solos, and instrumental solos. Admission is 25 cents, with children and high school pupils 20 cents.
