An Interstate Association of Fair Managers was organized in Mason City yesterday with T. H. and attractions to be held. The Central Town Fair circuit formed with Leo B. Marks of Eldora as president and H. S. Stanbery of Mason City as secretary treasurer. Racing dates schedule listed.
Mrs. Fred Heyl killed herself with two revolver shots in a barn at the W. J. Bowdish residence on February 8. Known in the county, the Heyls lived recently in McCallsburg Berlin and Van Horne. Mr Heyl formerly ran a drug business.
Hardin County Board of Supervisors met in Eldora on February 5 1909 for an adjourned January session with all members present. Wm Wiemer chaired. W W Boylan resigned as Justice of the Peace Tipton township and Elmer E McFarlane was appointed to fill the vacancy for two years from January 1 1909. Afternoon bids for printing the Auditor’s Annual Financial Report 1908 opened with Eldora Herald at 1.00 per page and Eldora Ledger at .95 per page. The drainage district petition by E G Hayden et al in Clay and Jackson townships was found expedient and approved with the auditor directed to proceed.
Wadeworth of Algona and Clark of Marshalltown lead a new fair federation with Barber of Mason City as secretary to align dates and attractions across Marshalltown Eldora Osage Mason City Austin Hampton Albert Lea and Nashua. After the state fair the sequence runs Marshalltown Eldora Osage Mason City Austin Hampton Albert Lee with a Des Moines joint meeting to follow and purse lists for pacing trotting and free for all events. A Valentine plant sale promotes flowers at J S Poluand Greenhouses.
R S Kellogg of the US Forest Service warns that annual timber use now surpasses forty billion feet and per capita consumption has risen from 215 to 470 board feet since 1850. He notes widespread forest depletion, shrinking high grade oak ash and hickory, rapid pine loss in the South, and rising forest product prices outpacing general inflation.
