Eldora board holds special meeting with J D Newcomer absent Miss Luella Albrook resigns as high school principal and Daisy Boylan of Hubbard is elected at 70 per month. Lottie R Smith of Waterloo is chosen as eighth room teacher at 4000 per month The board adjourns after final business Hubbard names appear on the license record.
Rev William C Stewart father of Dr George A Stewart of Eldora died suddenly at his Waterloo Iowa home on Wednesday April 18 from heart disease He was born in Vermont in August 1877 and served in a Vermont Civil War regiment with campaigns of the Army of the Potomac.
After the war he married and joined gospel ministry. Father of ten, five living, with a widow. A man of sterling character and steady pulpit work for forty years. He died in harness as pastor of the Baptist church at Livermore Iowa. Interment at Lake Mills Iowa with Rev Carroll officiating.
The Des Moines Sunday Register and Leader announces twelve renowned writers, six English and six American women, will serially publish new novels over the next year. The first, A Rock in the Baltic by Robert Barr, starts May 6 and promises wide excitement across two continents.
A sizable Sunday gathering concluded forthrightly as meetings organized by IME UNG terminated with clear outcomes. An immense concourse of people attended, reflecting broad interest and communal engagement.
The Smith Holden meetings closed Sunday night with a strong fraternal spirit in Union. Attendees came from Hubbard Eldora New Providence Gifford Whitten Honey Creek Miller Stanford Bangor Liscomb and Marshalltown. About 178 people converted during the three weeks and a church offering of 516 dollars was raised for the evangelist. A jubilee union prayer meeting will be held Wednesday at the Christian church and pastors plan to continue cooperative work. A purse of 205 dollars was presented to pastors by local citizens. The Christian church ladies plan a Saturday market at Robb Sons store from 1 to 5 PM.
The seed corn raised on Iowa state institution farms tested at nine nine percent yield across institutions including Anamosa Cherokee Clarinda Council Bluffs Davenport Eldora Glenwood Independence Knoxville Mitchellville and Mt. Pleasant. The board of control reports no crop failures and never replants due to bad seed with tests showing an average 99 percent yield. A photograph from the board offices shows Mr Downie pointing to the ninety nine percent result amid the seed corn display.
The past week saw 3 to 5 degrees above normal temperatures with no measurable rainfall since the 15th. Ideal conditions aided farm work as seeding of small grain nears completion in the north and south, oats and spring wheat acreage below recent years' average, corn prep advances, early potatoes planted, some corn on warm dry soil, and pastures providing forage as the week proved very favorable for farmers.
Mrs W McGregor of Hubbard visited Mrs George Vivars in late week. Many locals attended the Smith Holden meetings at Union Sunday. Jake Strawbridge from northwestern Town visited relatives here last week. James Trimble, recently moved from Missouri, renews acquaintances locally. Miss Mabel Lockard began spring term in Grundy county but returned home sick. Miss Lillian will supply for a few days.
Farmers are feeding as Abe Hutchens is laid to rest Friday. Mary Faris visited Miss Bessie Persho and attended Grant Center meeting. Lela Faris spent weekend at brother Preston’s home and attended Grant Center services. C H Creson of Caney Kansas says he likes Kansas. One corn field shows visible rows. Daniel Willcox drops dead on street near Congregational church. doctor verdict is heart failure. Funeral at Shepherd Church at three p.m. Rev Ellis in charge.
Walter Tiffany plans a new fence around his property. Charlie Tlanms of Marshalltown visited Bert Cas tor on Sunday. R S Rogers sold two carloads of hogs in Chicago last week, fetching top market prices. Messrs Sanders Hadley Joseph Wallace Luther Devendorf and Wes ley Crossan with wives attended Sunday evangelistic meetings. Messrs Charlie Case and Gilberts moved to the A J Anderson farm Monday to work for R.
