Secretary of Welfare Robert H. Finch spent hours at the White House as the bid to nominate John H. Knowles for assistant secretary faced a public test of wills. Finch warned he could quit if Nixon yields to opposition from the American Medical Association and Senate GOP leader Dirksen.

Sedalia Water Department advances the final phase of its eight year improvement plan begun in the early 1960s amid controversy. A 30 inch main from the pumping station to town and related flood protection and storage work are under way with a HUD grant of 393 800 and total project cost around 571 597 70. The project includes a new artesian well Lucky 13 and multiple distribution mains to improve the city water system.
