Washington Feb 27 Thousands greet President Wilson as a parade honors homecoming soldiers and sailors. Wilson in front of Marine Band carries a flag as Army aircraft hover overhead. He returns to the Capitol for a legislative conference after the march ended about 3 15 p m.
An army captive sausage balloon broke from its moorings above Washington today during a parade near the capitol. It drifted nine miles and landed far from its pilot Lieutenant G. H. McMillan who is believed to have bailed out with a parachute.
Washington February 27 The Internal Revenue Bureau announced regulations easing reporting for at source payments. Under the act any person paying one thousand dollars or more to a single recipient must report the payment. Filing date may be extended about sixty days beyond March 15. Reports exempt for certain routine charges and corporate divisions. Forms ready for distribution.
President Wilson nominated Mitchell Palmer for attorney general. He is expected to assume office March 4, a date tentatively set by outgoing Attorney General Gregory upon his resignation to return to private practice.
Sedalia awaits a large attendance for the St Marys Guild pre Lenten dance at the convention hall starting at 8:30. Metcalf's orchestra will provide the music as tickets are priced at 1 dollar per couple and 50 cents for singles.
Mrs. A D Henry returns to The Iron Springs sanitarium in Eldorado Springs after visiting her daughter. She has been at the sanitarium for four months and plans to stay through spring and summer. Mrs A G Tieman of 512 East Tenth street also returns to the same sanitarium.
Norman Hapgood of New York nominated as minister to Denmark to succeed Dr. Maurice Egan who resigned due to poor health. The announcement was made in Washington on February 27.
Nine men pleaded guilty after the raid on 112 West Main Street Tuesday night. Prosecution plans arraignments for nineteen total defendants with fines due after additional court actions.
Lieut. Robert I. Simpson of Missouri, world champion hurdler, won both the 70 yard high and low hurdles at the Millrose games in New York. He clocked 9.0 seconds in the lows and 9.2 in the highs, noting in a telegram to Coach Schulte that the lows were his best race ever.
Beatrice McDonald of the reserve nurse corps becomes the first woman awarded the American army distinguished service medal. She was seriously wounded but stayed at her post with wounded men at a British casualty station during a German night raid. Secretary Baker invited her to the war department for formal ceremonies.
An all day church gathering at Calvary Parish opens with corporate communion at 10 AM Friday February 28. A business session follows at 2 30 PM and a parish hall supper is served at 6 20 PM inviting the men of the parish.
President Wilson tonight explained the proposed league of nations constitution to members of the Senate and House foreign relations committees at a White House dinner via wireless from the George Washington. Debate continues through the week with leaders planning addresses and committee replies as Republicans and Democrats weigh the plan and its fundamental principles.
Washington reports that after a conference with President Wilson and foreign relations committee members there is no desire for an administration leader in the Senate to seek formal expression on the tentative league of nations draft. No endorsement resolution is expected.
Velma Wood, an instructor at the high school, remains in her position as concerns about her effectiveness persist amid ongoing evaluation.
The report notes no improvement in the father’s condition and that William Cunningham will substitute for Miss Wood at the high school, with the update received in the city on Thursday.
Mrs Grace Palus of Loyal Rebekah Lodge No 260 has been elected delegate from this district to the Rebekah state assembly to convene in St Louis on May 20 21 and 22.

Mrs. W. J. Yount wife of an M K and T shopman 1018 South Grand avenue was seriously injured when a section of terra cotta cornice on the center building fell striking her on the head. She was carried to St Marys hospital after temporary first aid at Rhodes drug store. The building is owned by Charles E Yeater and Merrit Yeater. Her condition improved by noon Thursday with no brain pressure found.
Merritt Yeater owner called contractor Dan Dean to inspect the upper terra cotta brick walls after a piece fell. He cited water leaks and rotted mortar as the likely cause and says rebuilding depends on the contractor's report.
Jefferson City Missouri February 27 Governor Gardner said he will veto all bills that spend more than state revenues, including salary increases. His revenue bills progress slowly while a tax on land and gravel from navigable rivers is dead in committee. Agricultural lawmakers oppose the mortgage recording tax and a corporate franchise tax boost remains pending.
C Foster Scotten of Lamonte area has served in the naval service since last July. He trained at Great Lakes and later joined the medical corps at a Philadelphia naval hospital. He arrived in Sedalia on Thursday after completing duties there.
William Moore, son of Mr and Mrs Moore of 2000 East Twelfth Street, formerly with Bell Telephone Co, passed through Sedalia en route to Kansas City. He served in the signal corps at Norfolk VA and has been honorably discharged. He will visit his parents before returning home.
Emile Brus longtime French consul for Kansas City and western Missouri died today after several weeks illness. He served twenty years in that post and is survived by his widow and a son serving with the American Expeditionary Forces.
Benjamin Parsley was fined ten dollars and costs by Justice J C Connor on a Wednesday for failing to send his children to school. A stay of execution was granted if he complies with the law.
Washington February 27 The Victory Liberty loan bill passed by the house yesterday was today ordered favorably reported by the Senate finance committee without change in form.
Washington February 27 The president appointed John F Lynch of St Louis to the United States marshal for the eastern district of Missouri.
Lloyd Sharron Clyde Hughes and John Powers three alleged automobile thieves in county jail attempted to dig a hole in the south wall Wednesday night Sheriff W W Bolton uncovered the plan and confined the men in a cell Four bricks were removed before the escape was thwarted Sharron and Hughes face charges including larceny of a Ford sedan a Buick roadster and burglary at Camp Branch Powers is charged with stealing a Ford touring car from East Broadway last October.
Princess Patricia of Connaught married Commander Alexander Ramsey at Westminster Abbey at noon with King George and Queen Mary in attendance. The ceremony drew a large royal and diplomatic gathering including Ambassador and Mrs. John W. Davis as guests.
Democrats pressed City Marshal J B Marksbury for his stance on halting gambling in Sedalia. Mayors and aldermen including Baumgartner Cordes Sweringen Dugan Geblken Berthouex Housel voiced support or calls for a citywide raid halt. The public canvass gathered diverse views on enforcement and fairness.
Washington reports that President Wilson accepted an invitation to speak in New York next Tuesday night before sailing for France. Taft is expected as a special speaker at the same event organized by a committee of societies favoring a League of Nations.
Citizens of Ramona Oklahoma have subscribed 800 dollars reward for the arrest and conviction of the murderer of Dr. Thomas B Dickson of Ramona who was killed in a Kansas City hotel last week. The Ochelata lodge of the Anti Horse Thief association started a movement to raise a thousand dollar reward for apprehension of the murderer with contributions from subordinate Oklahoma lodges.
A daily assembly train between Weimar and Berlin was diverted via Leipsig after Halle strikers blocked rails. The last train on the Halle route passed at full speed amid reports Spar tacan adherents planned an attack there.
Eight of twelve Gilson brothers who entered the service are killed in action. One lost an arm and a leg, another had both arms amputated, another lost an arm, and the last is reported wounded. The family of Miss Margaret Gilson and her parents Mr and Mrs C M Gilson live in Hartford and San Antonio respectively.

Secretary E G Bylander and the Missouri state fair board, meeting in Sedalia, say the 1 state fair in Jefferson City talks to budget officials will be the biggest and best ever with plans underway for a premium list. Board members include Swink Nelson Lovegren Dingle Milligan Hedrick Wingfield Dallmeyer Wilkinson Gibson Adams and Bylander. Local members will return Friday.
The War Department said conscientious objectors have returned about 20000 to the War Department Friends Society Y M C A and Red Cross. Of the sum 4379.82 went to the War Department 4000 to the Friends Society and 273 to the Y M C A. About 1200 objectors with farm furloughs sent 10000 to the Red Cross reflecting the wage difference between soldiers daily pay and their usual earnings.
President Wilson planned a two hour conference with members of congress in the capitol to discuss the legislative situation. Senator France of Maryland introduced a resolution urging an extra session starting March 5 but was blocked by democratic leaders.
A Missouri Pacific shopman Edward Donnegan sued the Missouri Pacific Railway for forty thousand dollars. In Jefferson City the case reached settlement by consent for 7500 dollars plus costs in open court. The decision followed efforts to avoid trial. Separately Senator McGruder moved to suspend rules and place a game and fish bill on the informal calendar for possible revision of license laws.
Francisco Villa's force attacked the Montezuma railway station 116 miles south of Juarez burning the station and destroying tracks. Telegraph wires were cut and General Jesus Castro and his Juarez command were forced to retreat as fighting was anticipated further south.
Mrs. Sarah Myers 52 died of apoplexy in her home at 213 West Fifth Street early Thursday. Miss Sybil Long found her body in bed and notified occupants. sons Clarence and Herman with American forces and daughter Mrs H L Bolton mourn her. Her funeral plans await word. She had lived in Sedalia twenty years and belonged to Royal Neighbors and a Jewish church.
Jefferson City Missouri February 27 A letter from Nicholas Pelligreen of St. Louis urges drastic legislation to curb national sleep habits calling it worse than drinking. He asks if it is too late to introduce a bill to limit sleeping and notes some lawmakers burn the midnight oil in committee meetings.
