Brest reports holiday preparations as President Wilson is due in Brest at noon Friday. Cabinet officials and dignitaries will welcome him while the American naval fleet maintains favorable progress conditions. The Place President Wilson is to pass is adorned, though rain has drenched decorations.
Viscount Grey former foreign secretary in Dewsbury argues a league of nations is the solution to freedom of the seas and says Britain and the United States can agree on joining such a league. He notes peace-time seas are free and Britain imposes no restrictions. He recalls the wartime blockade aided by the American navy and warns against its absence. He says Germany used the term freedom of the seas for its own ends.
Dr. W. H. Reynolds postmaster of Smithton identified nineteen gypsies allied for a postoffice theft of 55 dollars. The suspects were arrested by Johnson county officers in Warrensburg and released except a woman named Thomas who admitted nothing but refunded the money and will be turned over to federal authorities in Kansas City.
A fire in Joplin Missouri destroyed the Club theater building except for the Daily News Herald office. The blaze began in the basement around 9 30 and by 11 the structure collapsed with an estimated loss of 100000 dollars. First floor housed tenants and the Chamber of Commerce occupied the second floor.
A state committee departed at noon for Tipton and Boonville to prepare recommendations on appropriations for the next session. In Sedalia they were hosted by George W. Arnold, president, and FE. G. Bylander, secretary of the state fair board, and a Sedalia Chamber of Commerce delegation called on them socially.
Washington December 12 Admiral Badger urged Parliament to grant an appropriation to build a navy for the United States by 1925 as large as any other nation. He spoke before the federal board of the navy stressing the need for parity with leading powers.
The Red Cross launches a nationwide Patriot Roll Call membership drive. Adults and juniors are urged to join with a $1 contribution to support war wounded, hospitals in Europe, and future tuberculosis care, with workers ready to begin next Monday.
Paris reports negotiations for a longer German armistice began today at Treves in the Rhineland Prussia.
A state junketing committee led by Senator Carter M. Buford and Representatives T. B. Hodges J. D. Tolson Jr. and secretary T. B. Edwards visited Sedalia Wednesday night and Thursday morning to inspect the Missouri state fair buildings and grounds.
Captain W J Ferguson 41 B C United States army is coming home and will leave Pennsylvania for Sedalia after discharge. He plans to reopen his medical offices immediately and resume practice, bringing influenza experience from Fort Oglethorpe Camp Greenleaf and Camp Crane Allentown to Sedalia and Pettis county. He aims to aid the community during the influenza peril.
Private George H. Ware, Co. H 354th Infantry AEF, recaps Nov 1 to frontline drive west of the Meuse. He reports heavy machine gun fire, a near-miss with shelling, and carrying a major’s message to stay alive. He praises the Doughboys and hopes peace ends the war soon. Local officials in Sedalia urge citizen enlistment support and continued business activity for returning veterans.
Pettis County War Savings Committee announces Redemption Week beginning Friday December 13 to redeem all prior pledges for war savings stamps. The county quota is 700000 dollars with about 125000 outstanding. Cards are at banks and post offices. there is a booth at Third and Ohio streets for purchasing stamps and redeeming pledges.
Chairman Mel T Henderson of the Seda lia Chamber of Commerce industrial division calls a special committee meeting on after war reconstruction. The meeting will be held in the Chamber of Commerce rooms at 2 PM Monday December 16 with letters outlining problems plans and work already prepared for discussion.
Private Edwin Smith leaves for Waco Texas with the 129th Infantry later traveling to Camp McArthur. Private Charles Reynolds returns from Camp McArthur and receives discharge papers. Herbert Adams writes of his Argonne battle experiences in the 129th Infantry 35th division. George and Lewis Cramer near home in Europe and Dave Cramer at Fort Sill expect Christmas home. Charles G Whiprecht, visiting Sedalia grandmother, was commissioned at Camp Pike. John H Rector, navy aviation mechanic, arrived in New York on a returning transport. Seaman Ga Davis of eight years service visits Sedalia and Fayette relatives.
War Department telegram notifies parents Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Moerschel of Sedalia that their son Andy Moerschel of the 856th Infantry, 89th Division, was severely wounded on November 11 just before the armistice. He went overseas in late June after leaving Sedalia with a draft contingent April 27 alongside George Ware and George Paradis. Further information to follow.
Steady advance in corn futures appears in Chicago trading as government data show 1918 yield at five year low. Prices rose about seven cents and May options climbed to 1.37, with rapid market fluctuations and gains over yesterday's close.
J. H. Edwards of Sedalia sues R. J. Morrow of Paris for 200 dollars over damages to a four motor car from a collision at Third Street and Case Avenue. Trial conducted in circuit court Thursday. Attorneys: Edwards A L Shortridge H D Dow. Morrow R A Higdon and James F Browning.
Circuit Court records show Thursday filings including Eunice M M versus George W Vestal for divorce with general indignities alleged. Clark vs Sadie Freeland for divorce on desertion. A F Parks against Economy Steam Heating and Electric Company seeking 750 on contract. Holmes Hall and W D P O Bannon represent the plaintiffs.
T J Robb received a Thursday letter from son Porter who was killed in action in France October 50. The letter dated October 29 notes Porter had seen Lieutenant Boyd Carroll and Roy Todd. Sedalians.
Miss Lydia Montgomery, a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association executive board, has received official notification from Secretary E. M. Carter of Columbia that the meeting scheduled for December 26-28 in St. Louis has been postponed.
Sedalia camp No 16 Woodmen of the World announces a December 18 evening event with State Manager Claude Manlove as guest to confer the morning degree on forty candidates. W. L. Jackson J. E. Cook W. E. Shoemaker and J. L. Porter were initiated and ten membership applications acted on favorably.
City officials and Kansas City Railways president Philip J. Kealy announced street car service would restart at 7 o'clock tomorrow morning with cars run by nonstriking employees. Light and power are expected to return to normal by night. No night operations or talks with striking carmen were arranged.
On Tuesday December 17 the ninety fifth Sedalia monthly stock sale will be held at the usual venue under the same management. It closes 1918 as the year ends with favorable weather boosting livestock conditions and high market values. All Secalians and Central Missouri citizens may attend as buyers or sellers.
Dr. E F Staats returned from Pittsburg Kansas after attending the funeral of his daughter Mrs Edward Burns who died there Monday from influenza and pneumonia. Mrs Burns leaves her husband two sons Edwin and Ray aged five and three. She was Miss Carrie Staats before marriage and had lived in Pittsburg about six years. She was a 1910 Sedalia high school graduate and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mrs Staats will return Thursday night with the two grandsons.
Herman Demand secretary of the southern department headquarters National War Work Council of the Y M C A visited Wednesday with his parents Mr and Mrs Ed Demand at 318 West Fifth Street. Demand was en route back to San Antonio from Atlantic City where he attended a homework conference of Y workers.
Director General McAdoo tells Congress extending government operation to January 1, 1924 would keep the railroad question out of politics, finance needed improvements, and test unified control as the only practical solution. He warns extending beyond nine months would stabilize morale and allow a full program, while returning to private control without proper legislation would harm public and railroads.
Acting Secretary Polk at the state department published the note sent by U S ambassadors to Chile and Peru urging those nations to settle their differences. The United States offered all possible aid to achieve an equitable solution.
Secretary McAdoo told the House Ways and Means Committee that the government must issue five to five and a half billion dollars more in bonds this year to finance operations.
Berlin reports Dr. W. S. Solf resigns as foreign minister and cabinet accepts his retirement. The move follows tensions with the socialist and independence factions amid efforts to place the government on a sound basis.
London reports the German cabinet, fearing Allied refusal to work with the present regime and with soldiers and workers councils, is considering convoking the Reichstag to establish a stabilized government.
London reports that Premier Eber, newly arrived in Berlin, grows firmer with the Spartacus group due to support from Prussian guards. Donenhagen correspondence notes the harsher line reflecting the tense political climate.
The War Department announced the sailing of four army transports from France with about 9,000 men aboard the Albert Mallory Rapahannock Leviathan and Celtic. The Rapahannock sailed December 6 and the others December 8. On board were units, hospital patients, casuals and anti-aircraft detachments, with detailed assignments to various divisions and artillery units. The Martha Washington carried the 118th field artillery and training cadets, along with other personnel, on December 4.
The First Methodist Episcopal church plans a memorial service for Frederick Solomon Mitchell next Sunday night. Addresses will be given by Pastor Eli P. Anderson superintendent A B Ridgway and Dr E D Holbert. Mitchell was wounded near Verdun and died September 20 1918 after serving on the front for six months. He belonged to Sedalia Machine Gun Company and enlisted under Captain Logan. The public is invited to attend.
Six transports returned 8,840 American Expeditionary Force personnel to the United States. The Kroonland Cala mares Adriatic Ascanius and Tenadores docked with 7,040 soldiers, and Canopic at Boston with 1,506. Navy aviators and entertainers also came home plus wounded heroes from the Argonne fighting.
