Paris dispatches say the French army advances toward Noyon despite the Chaulnes-Roye road resistance delaying action. British forces under Rawlinson face heavy German opposition along the front as Chaulnes Heights remain contested while Lassigny reports a German hold.
London reports the town of Lassigny in Picardy has fallen to French forces after heavy morning engagements on Lassigny Ridge. Reports say fierce German resistance continued as French troops advanced along the ridge and down its slope with a battle potentially extending into the next day.
German forces occupy Plemont near Lassigny as Humbert’s army pushes two miles forward and secures St. Cloud farm on the Thiescourt plateau. Paris dispatch notes steady French progress toward Noyon while Rawlinson’s line faces fierce resistance along the Chaulnes-Roye road as Germans defend the Chaulnes Heights.

Fifty-three men reported to the local draft board on Wednesday afternoon to receive entrainment instructions for Thursday at 5 05 o clock. The delegation will travel to Kansas City for a two months training course in the Rahe automobile school. The service list had been printed earlier in the Democrat.
The fire department responded to 1214 East Twelfth Street where an automobile burned due to a wiring short. W H Wood places loss as very small. They also fought a small blaze at Hegarty and Quinn bar room at Main and Ohio caused by a cigarette in excelsior. quick work saved the building and contents from heavy loss.
A library gathering led by Mrs. Walter McNab Miller created a temporary suffrage group with officers including Chairman Mrs. Frank Monroe and Secretary Miss Jessie Blair. A mass meeting is set for August 28 in Sedalia to complete the county organization with speakers from St. Louis and Jefferson City.
Senators are asked to return at once as the unanimous consent agreement under which the Senate recessed until August 24 will be set aside. The measure will be taken up again next Monday for consideration.

A German submarine used poisoned gas released from oil over water to attack a Smith Island coast guard lighthouse station off North Carolina. Six men were overcome but survived. An American destroyer counterattacked with seventeen depth charges, but the submarine did not reappear.
Secretary Baker announced that General Pershing has created the First American field army, with Pershing in command of the American expeditionary forces. The front extends south of the Marne, likely along the line from St Mihiel to the Swiss border, with five corps about 1 250 000 men.
A German submarine near New York harbor sank the oil tanker Frederick A. Kellogg near the Ambrose channel last night. Thirty-five crew members reached safety. seven remain missing. Survivors were rescued by an American steamer and landed ashore.
A submarine sighting off Cape Cod fired at the steam trawler Walrus but missed by a narrow margin. Captain Clayton Morrisey reported the attack on arrival, noting fog allowed escape and warned other vessels of the danger.
Washington August 13 the senate military committee moved to report the administration manpower bill at once extending the draft ages from 18 to 45 with an amendment by Senator Reed to provide two years free education for all boys under 21 after the war. Senator Chamberlin said the bill would be reported Thursday and that a quorum was expected.
George F. Conser reports a Wilard Storage Battery Co communication inviting applications for government battery service. Three ensigns, thirty five chief petty officers, a battery foreman and one hundred first class battery men are sought. application blanks are available from Conser.
A carload of 100 Duroc Jersey hogs from Long View farm Lees Summit traveled on Missouri Pacific passenger train No 38 through Sedalia Tuesday morning. The animals were bound for New York for a short exhibition before proceeding to Brazil.
Fred Sandfort arrives from Estes Park Colorado to begin duties as Y M C A instructor in Sedalia about September 1. He was accompanied home by his cousin Miss Adelaide Sandfort from Humboldt Nebraska after a stopover en route.
The notice states subscriptions will not be accepted for less than one year as a conservation measure. It costs as much to handle a half year as a full year. The price remains $1 per annum, payable in advance.
A marriage license was issued Wednesday morning to Charles E. Heard of Zora Mo and Beulah B. Marriott of Stover Mo confirming their impending marriage in the state records.
A crowded Sedalia police docket shows many arrests Tuesday night for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Fines of 10 dollars were levied on several defendants, with others set for hearings or continued to later dates.
Charles F. Curtis and Arthur R. Payne, Sedalia natives, serve in the Fourteenth field artillery band at Lawton Oklahoma. Curtis is solo cornet player with bugle sergeant rank. Payne is assistant cornet soloist and formerly vaudeville performer with Davis and Payne.
