Dr J W K Bowen of Gammon Theological Seminary lectured at Tayor street Methodist church on June Lath. He argued the state cannot make manhood by law and urged training and culture through the church to lift the Negro from paganism toward God. He stressed education over legislative action and praised Christian work among African Americans. Bowen, a respected East and South lecturer, spoke again Tuesday at Hethel church. Oregon Advocate

In Memoriam Mrs Matilda Adams Dies at 63 in Arrow Rock
Matilda Adams widow of John Henry Adams Sr. died at home in Arrow Rock from la grippe aged 63. Survived by eight children four living, a brother and two sisters. Funeral at home with Mt Hermon and Green Valley courts assisting. Rev H Green preached. She was a Free Baptist member and a devoted mother. Burial beside husband at Sappington Cemetery. Poems and tributes accompany the notice.

Fourth at the Fair Aims for record Independence Day crowds
The Exposition committee plans an elaborate Fourth of July program to surpass all prior days, with free attractions, extensive illumination, and large seating. Aiming for at least a quarter million attendees, organizers expect heavy rail and streetcar traffic and will prepare woodland areas for picnics. Also noted are a Central Missouri Conference meeting at Versailles, and a Free Baptist church edifice on Pettis Street.
