A Pettis County forgery suspect who recently surfaced in St. Louis last week attempts to flee. Authorities pursue the escapee as they investigate the case and seek custody.
Prisoner Jesse Major escaped from a Missouri Pacific passenger train near Berger as Sheriff deputies escorted prisoners to the penitentiary. He leaped from a moving car window then was recaptured on the next train reaching Jefferson City. Minor injuries reported.
R W Thompson of Barry Mo succeeds General Robert McCulloch as Missouri division commander of the United Confederate Veterans. Preparations for the national UCV reunion at Memphis Tenn May 28 30 and the Missouri state reunion at Springfield August are underway with Laura Edwards Jefferson City as sponsor Anna Keith Kansas City first maid of honor and Mrs George H Inglish Kansas City chaperone. Maids of honor will be selected from Missouri’s fair daughters and will wear white gowns with red sashes.
St. Joseph Mo April 27 Mrs Sarah E Jones wife of Peter E Jones testified for the defense in the Martin murder case. She described entering the kitchen where dancers were and May had a pistol in his possession during the December 7 shooting night.
In a tense confrontation indoors a Missouri man named May drew a pistol and killed his companion, after a warning to get him in the morning. May had previously served seven years for murder of William J. Burdette, a wealthy farmer.

Peter Pehl sold his Sedalia retail liquor business at 109 West Second Street to G N Boutell for about 10000 dollars. Boutell takes charge May 1 with a five year lease at 150 dollars a month. Frank Kunkler left for Joseph Wolfert, the surviving partner of Reilly & Wolfert, who died in St Louis at 63 after grip illness. Wolfert headed large horse and mule contracts in the Spanish war era. Funeral set for Friday in Wichita.
Mrs. F. F. Combs hosted two large receptions at her West Broadway home on Thursday and Friday afternoons. The Nautilus club ladies attended Thursday with a musical program featuring Richard Johnson Bess Hail Fan Smith and reciters Mrs. J. M. Offield and Mrs. H. A. Pratt. Friday's event included twelve tables of progressive euchre won by Mrs. J. H. Doyle who received a bouquet of carnations.
Representatives of about twenty plow manufacturing concerns met in Chicago to form a single company to control the US market. Final action to be taken at a later meeting. About twenty plants, mostly in Illinois, will join with an expected capitalization near 50 million dollars. No name chosen yet.
S. M. Walker of 514 Ohio street, a music dealer, reports strong sales of Kimball pianos and organs. Two more hand pianos left Saturday, and he believes Pettis county shops see more Kimball sales than any other make. He also notes brisk movement of sheet music and a wide range of musical merchandise.
The Chicago Great Western announces April 30 and daily May departures for Buffalo round trips at one fare and one third, with special Tuesday rates. Tickets valid returnable by the following Saturday. catalog and pan American folders available through agents.
The will of the late Catherine Kuesel, who died last week, was filed with Probate Judge Parsons Saturday afternoon. The estate valued between $30,000 and $50,000 goes to her daughter Anna Marie, except for a $1,000 bequest and a monthly stipend of $25 to her son Henry.
County Superintendent Coleman has received a copy of the new school law and will provide teachers with information upon that subject. The Assembly club hosted a pleasant dance at Liberty park hall Friday night with Miss Sweeney of St. Louis among out of town guests. H. T. Williams Judge Shirk Lee Montgomery and W. F. Waller plan to travel to Kansas City Monday to attend federal court where the street railway sale is to be confirmed.
Former Senator Richard F Pettigrew allegedly earned about 250000 dollars since Congress adjourned by taking tips on stock exchange from James J Hill. Reports once inflated the total to 1000000 dollars. Pettigrew has returned to South Dakota pleased with the windfall and his changed views on stock trading.
George Rucker of Lamonte has accepted a managerial post with S. P. Johns & Son and will run the Hughesville branch. A Pettis county resident of about 46 with a family, he is trusted by the community and is expected to prove a valuable asset to the firm.

Mrs. W. H. Graffis hosted a Saturday evening gathering at her corner Fourth and Lamine home to celebrate her son Joe Graffis turning six years old with friends and light refreshments.
The Aces of East Sedalia defeated West End Saturday afternoon by 21 to 11. For the Aces battery were John Ragsdale and Otto McArthur. for West End, Rob Hoff man and Roy Williams.
Representatives of leading steel rail makers plan a price increase from 26 to 28 dollars per ton starting May 1. More than 2 million tons have been ordered since last fall, including 40 000 tons for James J. Hill’s Great Northern, bought from Lackawanna Iron and Steel. George J. Gould placed several orders totaling 88 000 tons, largely with Carnegie, Federal Steel and National Steel. Major mills are at full capacity and U S Steel firms expect work through November 1. Domestic orders dominate over foreign demand.
New York April 27. Dr S Winick offers to raffle himself as a husband at five dollars a chance. He aims to expand eligibility to ages eighteen to thirty while keeping restrictions against colored women. He hopes two to three thousand tickets sell for ten to fifteen thousand dollars.
John Costello, once with Barnum’s circus, collapsed and died while entertaining a Roosevelt Street saloon crowd in New York City. He was midway through the second verse of the tune "Gray Owen" when the incident occurred.
