Knobnoster rumors swirl over Lyman Littlefield and Della Crew alleged marriage in Kansas City with Crew claiming wedlock while Littlefield denies it. Reported breach of promise talks and a Sedalia sale tied to the Littlefield heirs add mystery as a receiver auction nears to end the receivership.
A. J. Murphy, accused of stealing Captain Stevens black horse and held for thefts in Lebanon, made a desperate escape from a moving train near Springfield. Sheriff Shanks pursued on horseback and recaptured Murphy near Montreal Camden county, after shots were fired to restrain him.
Sedalia street railway was ordered sold under foreclosure by first mortgage bondholders Kansas Loan and Trust Company and second mortgage bondholders Trust Company of America. Judgment for Kansas Loan and Trust Company amounting to $218,363 and for Trust Company of America $53,809 was rendered.
Edward D. Webb, a Hopkins merchant, left the city a year ago after declaring he was sick of Hopkins and would stay away for five dollars. He has now returned, paid the forfeit, and will resume business in Hopkins, declaring the town not such a bad place after all.
The funeral for Mrs. George Ragar was conducted Sunday afternoon at the Hickory Point church in Elk Fork Township. She died leaving a husband and eleven children, a sorrowful blow to the family.
Arthur Trader treasurer of the Royal Arcanum hands a $3000 insurance check to Mrs. Henrietta Glass widow of James Glass. The payment represents the coverage carried by her husband in the lodge.
Col. O. A. Crandall donated an illuminated cross to Calvary Episcopal church. The cross hangs above the chancel and features incandescent lights on a black background, creating a strikingly beautiful display when lit.
Carrie Nation tours attract crowds in Augusta with hatchet displays while a mistaken interview reveals a male impersonator. In Atchison the pastor denounces Nation harming temperance work and a planned visit by Belle Payne sparks local expectations of confrontation. Two Kansas twins visit Clinton Tribune offices noted for their health and twin bond.
Judge W. S. Shirk of Sedalia visited the White House on Friday and sought a meeting with the president. The illness of the president has limited callers to congressmen and top officials. Shirk did not disclose the conference topic but observers expect discussion of Missouri Republican faction recognition by the administration. No definite information was obtained.
Two country girls visiting town on Tuesday attracted attention with their striking likeness and healthy appearance. A local dentist who had engaged one of them noted the resemblance and wondered about their identity and relation.
Jefferson City Jan 27. House debate over Hackney of Jasper County bill to raise the appellate court pecuniary limit from 2500 to 5000 dollars to relieve supreme court docket pressure. Judge Bothwell urged 3500, then 4000, but amendments laid over till next Monday as Hackney defends the plan.
Judge Longan of Sedalia relieved Judge Hazell on the bench in parts of California last week. Jurors who sentenced the attackers of Chinese residents to one year in jail faced sharp public disdain for their verdict. Other sentences: Charles Kyle five years for robbery. Charles Blackburn two years for burglary tools. Ambers Parks two years for horse theft. Andrew Davis ninety days for common assault. The bank case Peoples Bank of Tipton versus Atkinson moved to Pettis County on change of venue. Judge Longan, a comparatively young judge with ample bench experience, is praised. his Virginia-born grandfather settled near Moniteau in old Missouri Territory.
Thomas J. Akins led anti kerens forces in Missouri and spent four days in Washington seeking a White House audience to relay insurgent grievances. He failed as the president was indisposed or busy, with reports the visit aimed to influence patronage amid Kerens influence. Judge W S Shirk remained in the capital and met with various powers while Akins questioned Shirk's loyalty.
The Central Shorthorn Breeders association will hold its annual meeting in Kansas City on January 29 and 30 at the Midland hotel. Elections for officers for the coming year will be held. Charles E. Leonard of Bell Air, Missouri, is the incumbent president and likely to be re elected. The group formed about three years ago to push shorthorn breeding in the west and promote the American Shorthorn Breeders association. Leonard organized the effort with N. H. Gentry of Sedalia, G. W. Glick & Son, and George Bellows and W. P. Brush of Kansas City.
Post office appointments reported in Missouri include G. W. Mattox at Akinsville Morgan County LaTour in Johnson County and Joseph McC Short in the same region, reflecting regional clerical changes.
