Crowds gathered as the Twenty Seventh Volunteer Infantry steamed through the Missouri Pacific station en route from Camp Meade to San Francisco. Col. James M. Berry, veteran of Civil and Spanish wars, led officers including Maj. Bryan and Lt. Ed O Flaherty, with Capt. William Mason among them. The regiment, in canvass uniforms, paraded and performed exercises to ease travel fatigue.
A Twenty seventh U S Volunteer Infantry unit reaches the area with 1487 men recruited from New York Washington D C New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Notables include Capt Richard Henry Savage a famed novelist.
