In federal court at Jefferson City Samuel Johnson, William Johnson, and Daniel Young of Pettis county pleaded guilty to passing a counterfeit dollar at a restaurant. They were sentenced to three days in jail and fined $100 each. All defendants are in their teens.
In Youngstown Ohio on October 20 William H Branton a grocer shot Constable Jenkins and then shot his wife before killing himself. Mrs Branton had recently left him and visited the home with the constable to collect clothing when the tragedy occurred.
The Colorado Supreme Court decided in favor of the anti Teller faction of the silver Republican party, denying the right to fuse with Democrats and Populists and preserving a straight-ticket slate. The ruling is understood to deny National Chairman Towne the power to remove state chairmen.
At a Nashville meeting the foreign mission board of the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church resolved to extend church bounds into new American possessions. Bishop Candler was named to invade Cuba and Porto Rico and establish permanent organizations there.

A lodge of the Order of Ells for colored men was formed in Cincinnati on October 20. Grand Exalted Ruler Galvin says the action is unwarranted and void since the constitution requires members to be white. He will take no action unless the lodge adopts the B. P. O. E. name.
George Davis of Lerdo, 30 miles northwest, died when lightning struck a vacant barn he sought shelter in during a storm near Humphreys. The barn burned, consuming Davis and his team.
Three plasterers brothers Charles James G and Frederick Smith were on an elevator on the tenth floor when the rope broke. They fell to the first floor and all sustained serious injuries. James is believed dead and the others in critical condition.
