A Milwaukee man attempted twice to force his way into the president's presence this morning, armed with a knife and pistol. Police intervened, detaining the suspect as the president continued with scheduled engagements.
Peter Elliott a Milwaukee machinist attempted entry at the White House north portico. He fought, was overpowered by door keeper Ciscle, wounded in the elbow and scalp, and taken to hospital before police detention. Elliott claimed to seek the president for fun and spoke of insane motives linked to a church incident earlier.
Five cases are reported at Laredo this morning one confirmed and four suspicious. Authorities say the outbreak is under control and expect to stamp it out in a few days. The report comes from Fort Worth via Scripps McRae.
A man who lost his money sought revenge by burning the gambling outfit to punish those involved. He used kindling wood to set the items aflame.
Mrs. J D Sicher died in Kansas City at 1 50 this morning after cancer of the stomach. A Sedalia pioneer of about thirty years she lived at 315 East Third street with husband Jos D Sicher and children Camilla and Harry. Remains to arrive on No 4 this afternoon for burial.
In Constantinople the Sultan asks for the American fleet to leave Beirut. Minister Leishmann replies the United States will withdraw when Turkey officially recognizes all American schools and provides protection. In Washington Admiral Cutton reports Khalil Pasha now leads Beirut affairs.
Rain today caused the postponement of the fourth in the series between Pittsburg and Boston. The game, originally set for Pittsburg, is deferred to a later date as weather disrupts the schedule.
Denver, Oct 5 A P Cope a saloonkeeper according to mute evidence in the room shot dead his sister in law Miss Hernandez as she lay with Mrs Cope in bed and then killed Mrs Cope as she fled to another room before shooting himself. The bodies were found by the bartender this morning. No cause is known for the deed.
Massillon Ohio October 5 Albert Wetter bank director and Massillon Steel company president died by suicide today the motive for the act is not known authorities reported no other details were released.
F B Powell aged 37 a well known Longwood citizen died this morning after a brief pleurisy illness. He lingered since Friday and death was not unexpected. He leaves a seriously ill widow. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 11 from Miller's chapel.
Hugh Carrell ten year old son of E M Carroll was accidentally shot in the stomach Saturday afternoon while playing with a rifle in the post office at Valda. He was brought to Southeast Sedalia this morning and is under care at relatives home. The ball is not located but recovery is hoped unless infection or complications arise. Dr W B Shirk attends.
London reports an earthquake strike the Fleet valley in Sutherlandshire Scotland this morning with loud distinct reports followed by tremors and rumbling felt across the area.
New York reports Sam Parks arrived from Kansas City and said his wins as a labor leader will lead to voluntary retirement. He denied plans for large strikes in the city and dismissed reports of such actions.
Richmond, October 5. General Bradly Johnson, famed Confederate officer, died in Richmond after a long illness at age 74.
