Fort Leavenworth May 18 reports forty desertions in sixteen days from two Sixth Infantry battalions encamped on the rifle range. One company lost sixteen men, an unprecedented toll in army annals. Pay day amid severe weather is suspected as a cause.
A popular Sedalia couple, Charles Kelk and Ruby Reynolds, obtained a marriage license Tuesday evening and wed secretly at Windsor. The pair eloped, leaving relatives expecting a dance, and returned to Sedalia to face astonished families and friends. The bride, a Sedalia High School student, and the groom, son of W J Kelk, begin married life amid well wishes from the community.
Gordon Taylor and Ada Weathers will marry this evening at 8 30 at Rev Humphrey’s home church north of Lamonte. The ceremony will be witnessed by relatives and a few close friends. Afterward the couple will go to the bride’s home for a wedding dinner.
Rev. and Mrs. Dudley M. Clagett will entertain at a Friday evening event hosted by the United Presbyterian Church Society of the Broadway church.
Almaretta Morgan grand chief of the Degree of Honor auxiliary to the Ancient Order of United Workmen is in the city to organize an auxiliary to Eintrecht lodge. She will address Eintrecht members at Pioneer Hall 303 Ohio Street this evening at 8 o'clock. a large attendance is urged.
Francis Marion Lane and Susie Hall both of Sedalia were married this afternoon in the probate court room by Judge M. A. Ayres.
Ohio state Republican convention in Columbus adopted a platform praising Roosevelt and pledging delegates to his nomination. It commended Governor Herrick and the last legislature and called for continued protection of American industry and labor, sound finance, and enforcement against unjust trade restraints.

Fort Scott Kansas May 18 Judge William Margrave aged 90 the oldest justice of the peace in Kansas and perhaps the nation is dying at his home He was the first justice of the peace in the Territory of Kansas appointed in 1854 and has been reelected every two years for fifty years He witnessed the first steamboat ascend the Missouri River Born in Gasconade County Missouri.
Tokio reports daily skirmishes on Liao Tung peninsula between May 5 and 16 with Japanese detachments driving back Russians. They destroyed railway and telegraph service and seized heights near Kinchow after severe fighting at Tulantien. Japanese casualties total 146 with nine officers wounded.
St Petersburg reports Lt Gen Zassalitch is relieved and Lt Gen Count Keller appointed to succeed him. London papers debate Kuropatkin’s retreat prospects near Mukden and possible imminent battle. Japanese bombardments of Port Arthur and Dalny are ongoing as Russian force strength is reassessed.
William E. Bradley a 60 year old Middletown inventor married Carrie Millinger of Kansasity in New York after advertising for a wife. Millinger, recently widowed with a fortune, owns 1590 El Reno Oklahoma building lots valued at 200 dollars each. Bradley is a Civil War veteran with a married daughter and some means.
Springfield May 18 The thirty ninth ballot in the Republican state convention for governor ended with Yates 483 Deneen 442 Lowdon 396 Hamlin 112 while Sherman Warner and Pierce combined for 92 The fortieth and forty first ballots brought no material change and the convention adjourned to 3 pm.
Marriage licenses issued today to Francis M. Lane and Susie Hall of Sedalia and to G. W. Taylor of Lamonte and Ada Weath ers of Lamonte.
The first mortgage deed of trust securing a $5,000,000 loan from American Trust and Savings Bank of Chicago to Kinloch Long Distance Telephone Company of Missouri was recorded in Pettis county today. George W. Galbreath of St. Louis serves as trustee on the gold bonds drawing 5 percent interest, redeemable in twenty-five years.
The one hundred sixteenth general assembly of the Presbyterian church convenes in Buffalo on May 19 for a ten day session. All church officials and about fourteen hundred attendees are expected to attend the gathering.

Peter McDonald and William Rogers were jailed after a fight. arraigned before Justice Smith and sentenced to eight and five days for disturbing the peace.
