Twelve thousand Denver workers were called out in a widespread strike that halted most commerce from restaurants to groceries and bakeries. The executive committee and union agents ordered the walkout, with potential rail shutdowns ahead as arbitration efforts failed.
Bishop E R Atwill opposed changing the general church name citing lack of unity and possible division among Episcopalians. A lay delegate offered resolutions favoring a change to American Catholic Church in the United States, to be discussed at the October 1903 convention.
In Chicago May 13 a $14,000 settlement ended Fredericka Woydt v Sedalia Electric and Railway Co after a week trial with verdict of $21,000 previously. The case covers personal injuries and includes two related suits totaling $40,000. Attorneys praised the settlement as strikes loom over wage scales and arbitration seeks a regional office.
Washington May 13 Government crop report shows winter wheat in first class condition with acreage far above last year. Winter wheat cultivation reaches 33,107,000 acres, down 28 percent from last fall sown and up 15.8 percent from last year s harvested area. Abandoned acreage mostly limited to Kansas Texas and California.
The Lutheran conference opened last evening at Trinity English Lutheran Church with Rev J Jacoby and a sermon by Rev Luther P Ludden. Weather delayed visitors. Miss Anna Evelyn Sandford from India was to speak tonight but train delays caused a substitution by Dr J A M Ziegler.

In Valparaiso Chile May 13 three thousand soldiers were deployed to quell strikes by dock laborers. A riot the day before left ten dead and two hundred injured, prompting the government to call out troops to prevent a recurrence.
Norfolk Virginia May 13 The disappearance of Mrs Bessie Scott formerly Bessie Eicher and Miss Maggie Madison has unsettled Lambert's Point spouses. Mrs Scott daughter of Joseph Eicher wed two weeks ago to B W Scott of Philadelphia. Scott returned to work in Philadelphia and she planned to join him next week. The pair left Tuesday to visit Newport News and have not been heard from since raising fears of foul play.
