Annie Devery, 19, daughter of ex police chief “Big Bill” Devery, ran away with Edward Fink. The pair wed in a secret elopement last night in New York and faced potential scandal, but Devery forgave them afterward.
Justice Kruse of the Supreme Court orders the distribution of insurance funds totaling 25,000 dollars. Attorney Wallace Thayer receives 10,000 from Arthur R. Pennell plus 15,000 from another company as trustee. J Frederick Pennell, administrator of Pennell's estate, had opposed but dropped the challenge after documents were reviewed.
In Lorain Ohio May 5 the Reichlin murder inquest drew a crowd as Father Walser, charged with murder, faced scrutiny. Officials indicated insufficient evidence for a grand jury while vowing to protect against mob violence. Walser may testify at the inquest scheduled after today’s proceedings.
In Santa Fe on May 5 President Wilson made his first New Mexico appearance at Lamy. A small crowd gathered as two Mexicans fired cannon from a hill. He greeted the crowd, then spoke from the capitol steps and visited the governor at the mansion after a brief stop at the territorial penitentiary.
Circuit Attorney Folk said the Missouri state boodling investigation would continue in St Louis without waiting for Cole county to resume. He noted no explanation for the Cole county jury's sudden adjournment and said more indictments for bribery may follow, with witnesses from the Senate and House under subpoena.
New York May 5 Mrs Grover Cleveland reportedly opposes her husband returning as a presidential candidate. Her life at Princeton suits her and she does not want the comfort disrupted. Cleveland reportedly acknowledged the remark and said he could not accept the nomination if offered.
At the Business Men's club last meeting a motion to form a committee to cooperate with six mile road officials to connect city streets with six mile roads was adopted. President Heard appointed F. F. Combs J. S. Brenneman and Lee Montgomery to lead the effort.
Charles J. Nye and his wife arrived from Logansport Indiana and plan Sedalia as their new home. Nye serves as deputy for the Tribe of Ben Hur in the territory and will be greeted warmly by Sedalia chapter members of that order.
News from Newport News reports the Old Dominion line steamer Hamilton collided with a Merchant line steamer in Chesapeake Bay early today and thirty persons were drowned. No victims’ names have reached here yet.
Police guard the subway from Sixtieth to One Hundred and Fourth streets after Italian strikers clash with replacement workers. In McCombs dam a mob shower of stones drove five hundred men from work as police dispersed the disturbance.
Chicago May 5. Labor and management clash over arbitration. Strikers demand exclusive use of union help as a prerequisite for any arbitration plan, while employers refuse. The laundry strike continues with no agreement in sight.
George W. Menefee, contractor of the state fair race course, met Secretary Rippey to discuss repairs. Officials will consider leveling the infield and sowing grass at the next fair board meeting, with Menefee likely to receive the contract.
The forecast warns of possible showers and thunderstorms tonight and Wednesday. Warmer readings are expected in the southwest portion tonight with unsettled conditions across the area.
The Theodore Thomas Orchestra from Chicago reached Sedalia at 12 50 PM by special train from Clinton. The group, 50 strong, plays tonight at the opera house under the Gentlemen's Musical club. A matinee drew a large crowd and tonight is expected to exceed that audience as visitors arrive from Windsor Boonville Tipton Fortuna Lamonte Houstonia and other towns.
A May 5 Chicago blaze started by an explosion swept through Olson's picture plant. Watchman Frank Tobin is feared dead as flames burned a full block. Property valued at seventy five thousand dollars was destroyed leaving seven families homeless.
Mr. Mike McGinley received a message from Kansas City announcing the death of Mrs. Dennis Golden, former Secarian, now of Kansas City. Dan Donahue of Dampville, Mo., will care for the body upon arrival in Sedalia tomorrow. The cause and funeral hour are not stated.
Washington May 5 Commander Vreeland of the monitor Arkansas now at St Louis has been ordered to take the vessel back to New Orleans as the fall in the Mississippi causes fear that the heat will.
