Paris March 3 The Chamber of Commerce welcomed Francis head of the St. Louis exposition this morning and by noon he left for Madrid. A meeting is arranged there with about three hundred prominent board members who plan to exhibit at St. Louis.
Rudolph and Collins, accused of robbing the Union Bank at Union Missouri and killing Detective Schumacher, resisted police bribes for revolvers and knives. Authorities report over eight thousand dollars found in their possession and heightened guard at Hartford jail. Rudolph claims he and his partner acted alone and vows further retaliation if jailed.
In Rome on March 3 a downpour did not deter 65,000 worshippers who filled St. Peter's to witness the Pope's high Pontifical Mass marking the twenty fifth anniversary of Pope Leo XIII's enthronement. Forty four cardinals and 315 bishops attended as the procession moved from the Vatican amid cheers. The crowd's density caused minor accidents and the Pope appeared thin and hoarse, declaring I can die happy now as the procession began.
In St Louis on March 3 the Wabash railroad won a federal court injunction to stop a planned strike by trainmen yardsmen and firemen over demands for higher wages and other issues. Conductor workers already agreed to a wage increase. About 1200 workers would have been affected. President Ramsey set a noon deadline and signaled the dispute would be settled by him unless concessions were made. An appeal to President Gould occurred but is not expected to intervene.
Town near Amarillo, Fort Worth reports 12 inches plus snow in six days, blocking all trains and stranding about 200 passengers. Cattle losses expected to be heavy across the region as roads and lines remain shut.
Washington reports William Cromwell received the Panama Canal company reply to the U S request for an extension beyond March 4. The company agrees to extend the time for a reasonable period to ratify the canal treaty, and the cabinet was informed by Attorney General Knox.
The Ohio supreme court ruled that voluntary relief associations maintained by railroad companies in Ohio are valid. The decision was announced in Columbus on March 3.
The body of a woman found in the Ohio River was identified as Hannah Goddard, one of Albert Knapp’s murdered wives. Edward King, brother-in-law to the deceased and husband of Knapp’s sister, confirmed the identification to authorities. Hamilton Chief Kummerling also viewed the remains and supported King’s assertion.
Cumberland Md March 3 Dr Charles H Ohr aged 92 reputed to be the oldest Mason in the country died today in Cumberland.
A Chesapeake and Ohio passenger train collided with a freight in Russell Kentucky yards. Brakeman Miller and Conductor Dans died. Fred Rose in the caboose fatally injured. Several passengers injured. The crash is blamed on the operator failing to hold the passenger train.
A jury awarded fifty pounds to Wallace, former secretary to Lady Cooke, aka Tennessee Claflin, in a London libel suit. Wallace said he was hired to shadow her husband, found no wrongdoing, and was later accused of blackmail.
