Afternoon of Rare Sport at Liberty Park
A postponed Fourth of July program at Liberty park drew several thousand spectators as Capt E W Stevens oversaw a day of bicycle races trotting events and a dramatic chariot race. Bert Scheer won the half mile bicycle race, Charlie Smith took the mile handicap, and Onward Fewell led the mile trotting exhibition. In a thrilling three mile foot race Frank Padgett and W H Ramsey competed, Ramsey finishing first after running barefoot. Padgett’s defeat sparked charges of foul play. The Second Regiment band and local volunteers aided the event’s smooth execution.
