A Sedalia group of prominent railroad men and Missouri Pacific representatives will meet in St Louis to press for a revision of long overwork hours. They seek to base computations on miles per hour and require compensation for all overwork beyond 12 hours, amid complaints of 19 to 23 hours on duty.
Yesterday and today two sets of teachers demand pay as East End residents complain about ball games on streets and a Perth Springs tournament. Judge Rogers heard a hard fought case while Georgetown school district reorganized into a high school district and hired new teachers including Mrs Jennie Barrack Miss Mabel Barrack and S A Jackson.
John W. Hamilton and J. W. Blake were arrested on a charge of using the mails to defraud. At a preliminary hearing in St Louis, Hamilton was held for the grand jury in 1000 dollars and Blake in 500 dollars. Blake posted bond and was released. Hamilton aims to bond within a week and request transfer to Montgomery county jail if he fails. Hamilton had no counsel and tried to shield Blake claiming no involvement. Trials set for next November night. Animals found today. hay crop praised. band to meet at Pertle Springs September 8 for a three day session. An entire train of sheep moved over the Katy to the market yesterday.
A Georgetown school district suit over pay for teachers fired after a new board took office continued in court. The case, brought by Hastain and Kelly, faces verdicts and possible appeal. Prof and Mrs Pirkey acquired Lenzen’s conservatory and plan a full musical institute opening September 1. The facility will offer piano, organ, violin and strings with additional instructors and free instrumental clubs. Recitals led by Prof O W Tiede and a children’s recital are planned. Lenzen prepares to move to St Louis.
John Henry Summers caused a disturbance at his mother's home in Ohio this morning and faced multiple old fines after police were alerted. Three trespass cases were each fined ten days in police court. Peter Brady appeared before Judge Kinsey and received twenty days after an attempted theft of boys near Sedalia. he was whipped at the city limits to hasten his departure. George Birden, a Black man, was arrested by Deputy Constable Card for attempted car break in and given ten days.
John H Mahan aged 63 died Friday at his home near Knob Noster Missouri He was an old settler and had a wide acquaintance in Johnson and Pettis counties.
John Riley, former landlord of the Riley hotel, phoned town doctors claiming he was shot and in need of help. Physicians arrived to find him only half shot and joked about an autopsy.
Another man named M L Barrett reports pickpocketing on the Fourth of July. He lost five dollars and several valuable papers.
Judge Davis in Boonville overruled the defendant's bid for a new trial. Appeal bond set at 2500 dollars. Referee Daniel Duggins of Marshall to try two remaining Bente vs Potter cases on August 30 possibly in Sedalia.
An elderly Appleton City resident stirred excitement at the Katy depot around nine o clock in the morning as onlookers watched his display. The man demonstrated a remarkable imagination drawing attention from travelers and local spectators.
A fine program is arranged for Tuesday at Liberty Park. The best horses in Pettis county will be entered and the crack bicyclists will also compete. Cody Bloch says foot races will be fine sport. The Second Regiment band will furnish music, opening at 2:30.
Charley Gray son of Dr Gray living about ten miles south of Windsor left farming for better prospects. He went to Sedalia and secured a Davis sewing machine sales job. In one week he sold 12 machines and will work as general agent for county seats. Mrs Gray will join him soon to travel.
Saloon men met to discuss a new rule for Katy workers not to visit saloons on or off duty. A petition may go to the council requesting a reduction in saloon licenses, affecting many Katy employees. Judge Kinsey marked his fifty sixth birthday today with celebratory drinks. Servant Harker Drug Co.
