A rear end collision occurred on the Katy near Gore Missouri when work train engine 143 failed to flag, caboose engine 62 struck while waiting for steam, badly damaging the engine and several cars. Extra Parsons crew from the Katy shops were handling the work train.
Grain movement has started on the MK and T system. The locomotive department is taxed to supply engines for the train loads of grain in yards at various points. Yesterday sixty five cars were in local yards and over two hundred awaiting shipment at Kansas City.
Joe Bass a section laborer from String town has fever. Jake Prim an extra gang worker from South mac Alester suffers dyspepsia. JC Large a blacksmith helper from Denison wrenched back. R A Glover an extra gang member from South Me Alester has fever.
Colored miners who passed through the city on a special train Saturday went to work in the Katy mines at Coalgate, Indian Territory, yesterday.
Wm Norton brakeman on Katy freight train No 159 had a narrow escape at Franklin Junction. A jarred box car rolled into the train striking the car Norton stood on. He leaped clear as the car lurched and turned, escaping with only slight bruises.
Among the trains, Katy railroad staff report layoffs and run changes with C A Chapel, N M Hinshaw, and C M Ducker noted. J A Murry from St Louis visits on business as M F Miller also lays off with S H Smith substituting. Missouri Pacific gains brisk work while L W Bushnell plans a Sunday visit to St Louis and G S Lander awaits the finder of his watch.
Constable Robb is expected to return with Nettie Wareham of Green Ridge tomorrow after a long pursuit linked to the infanticide charge. The case has caused sensational incidents since the discovery of the illegitimate child in a vault weeks ago. Authorities may also prosecute the girl’s father for related offenses.
A renowned traveler who frequented Sedalia and targeted many downtown businessmen especially saloon keepers is out of work. He carried little cash but a fat checkbook. After he departed Sedalia the many checks he gave were returned as protested, leaving the saloon men with the funds in dispute.
The WCTU holds its usual meeting at the First ME church on Friday July 7 at 3 p m. The agenda includes a discussion of Koka-Cola. All are welcome to attend.
Miss Jessie Knowles, a pupil of Mrs. R. H. Lukenbill, passed through Sedalia this morning en route to her Montana home. She has spent the past year at the Chicago conservatory of music after long visits in Sedalia.
The XXX went to Calhoun Tuesday to play ball and faced the real team. The score was 18 to 11 in Calhoun’s favor. The Calhoun squad was formed from former boys but plays well.
Rich zinc ore is reported from shafts sunk by Morgan county surveyor T. O. Stanley amid plans for extensive mining. Other local items note a man declared insane, illnesses, injuries, obituaries, and community moves in Sedalia Versailles Knob Noster and nearby towns.
An experienced miner from the Joplin district visited Mr. Stanley's office and praised the ore as better than anything at Joplin. He showed a device to locate hidden ore beds and said he plans to locate something good in the state soon. A local company may organize for large scale mining if current shafts prove fruitful. Miss Cahn will study voice culture in Paris. Mr and Mrs James B Mockabee welcome a son. Eintracht lodge installed officers with Deputy Grand Master Fred C Erbe. Chas Minter and Chas Snow brought home an imported English fox hound. David Rolstin of Sedalia returned to handle farm business north of town. The Fall River Evening News notes Shoemaker Clark school exercises, with Capt. C. D. Sigsbee in attendance.
Mrs Mary Carter of George town is very sick. S A White receives a $1000 loan from school funds. H C Moore of Bunceton earns a 3-year teachers certificate. Obe Brown injures a side on a steel rail while working on the Georgetown section.
A notorious gang led by Fegley Nigh Shepherd and Jennings passed through the city at 12 45 pm en route to Jefferson City penitentiary. Sheriff Cantrill and deputies oversaw a heavily armed party including Captain Chester to thwart any rescue attempt.
A fire caused by a defective flue damaged a home owned by Dr Rogers at the corner of 6th and Osage. Building loss about $50 and goods $50, fully insured. Firemen from Comp No. 2 were delayed by a mistaken run but did not alter the outcome.
County Surveyor Stanley provides the Sentinel with a three year six month rainfall and cloudy day tally. Readings show monthly totals for 1895 1897 1599 with figures for January through June and annual sums. cloudiness counts also listed by month and year.
Chas McComas narrow gauge brakeman returns to duty today after a close call with death six months ago. He has spent most of the interim in Katy hospital recovering.
Hon CE Yeater receives telegram from A W McKenzie stating that bonds refunding proceeds are being arranged. The missive outlines the action and cites forthcoming steps toward completion.
Delayed items to be paid on July 1 were presented yesterday, taken up and canceled. Fifty bonds of $1,000 each were issued, forty-seven refunded and three taken up. A Cincinnati message says new bonds replace the old ones redeemed.
Attorney Lee Lovinger reflected on a selection of jokes by friends when a counterfeit dollar allegedly paid as a fee surfaced. He claimed Laura Joplin and her mother offered the payment and he only realized the counterfeit after attempting to settle a debt with a friend.
A challenge is issued by Joe Roe and Al Sturges to E H Smith and A B Dempsey for a fifteen third live third match at Liberty Park on the afternoon of July 14. Several additional events will be arranged to make an engaging program.
Roscoe Parmerlee, nearly drowned Sunday at Brown Springs, is seriously ill at his Prospect and Second home. Although seen by a doctor Monday, he attended the Flambeau club Fourth celebration and now is believed to have spinal meningitis.
Laura Joplin faced charges of disturbing the peace in Sedalia. Testimony was described as the most disgusting ever heard in a local courtroom. The jury sentenced Joplin to thirty days. Ike Adkins, involved in the disturbance, had his case continued to tomorrow morning.
The First Christian church ladies host an ice cream social on East Broadway on Friday evening July 7 from 6 to 10. Everyone is invited.
