Citizens discuss politics and municipal reform as candidates for mayor and alderman are debated. Leaders urge removing city affairs from party influence while urging representation from all wards and parties. Strong support for a Citizens ticket and independent nominations to improve city management.
The Central District Medical Society of Missouri will meet in Sedalia on February 1 with a full program. Readings cover elephantiasis diagnosis, quackery remedies, reminiscences of fifty years practice, and smallpox discussion. Officers include President A. H. Culp and Secretary H. B. Cole.
A message from H. B. Wieman aboard the transport Hancock describes a safe voyage to Manila Bay on Dec 19 1899. He notes Cavite fortress Dewey’s actions the sunken Reina Christina the Oregon and other ships near the city. He mentions a typhoon a wet deck a rain soaked baggage and a night sighting of Farallon de Parajos.
The speaker expresses support for measures to put better men in city offices, blaming gamblers saloonmen and prostitutes for past election outcomes. He says he has no comment on party conventions endorsing the ticket.
Albert Byron Turnham aged 59 died at 12 15 this morning at his home 1214 Osage He was a native of La Grange Oldham County Kentucky and a veteran of the Civil War serving in the Fifth California Infantry Second Massachusetts Cavalry Fourteenth Illinois Cavalry and Twenty second Regulars After the war he joined Sherman’s march to the sea Funeral services will be conducted by Rev Hayworth of Dresden Saturday morning at 9 30 from the residence.
Pp. Fremont Rocket, known for controversial war views, offers a life sized 15 by 15 foot exhibit at the High School tonight. He is a noted photographer and lecturer who captured scenes from the fighting Twentieth Kansas in the Philippines.
W H Carter states in the Capital columns that he was mistakenly listed as a club director. He says he agreed to join at the start to help form a first class club but resigned and does not want to be identified with the board or its management.
General Superintendent H. G. Clark issued circulars announcing appointments in the Missouri Pacific Atchison Division. The St. Louis section notes new personnel, hospital arrivals, and local railroad incidents as part of the day’s railroad notices and personals.

At 10 o clock this morning the whistle blew signaling closure of the Katy shops until February 1. Officials announced the shutdown and that the same force would be recalled on the specified date.
Adjutant General M F Bell reports Missouri National Guard in strong order with $64 000 in funds after recent increases. Encampments will combine regiments for a summer brigade camp pending site selection in Mexico Moberly or Sedalia. Bell cites solid organization and arms with 1000 rifles extra and praises Brigadier General Harvey L Clark and Colonels Sinclair Holtcamp. Bell also campaigns for railroad and warehouse commissioner at the Democratic state convention.
Kansas City yesterday returned an indictment charging Thos Westlake with murder in the first degree for killing Wood Mitchell, collector for the North Furniture Co. Smallpox has broken out in the city jail, adding danger to Westlake’s confinement. Ten men, charged with or sentenced for murder, are among the quarantined prisoners.
Easter falls on April 15 this year with Lent beginning March 6 forty days earlier. The late Easter is near the latest possible date for the feast and hinges on the Paschal moon determining the moving date.
Revs Buchanan Fuller and Plan nette will go to Lamine church near Clifton City tomorrow to ordain two young ministers Thomas Potter and Zebidee Thomas, students from William Jewell College at Liberty Missouri. The Thursday afternoon club was entertained by Miss Clara Scheiner yesterday afternoon.
