Sedalia society hosts Dugan reception and Second Regiment ball

Mrs. George E. Dugan entertained with a daytime reception from 3 to 6 PM at 116 East Fifth Street honoring Miss Johns of Pennsylvania. The Second Regiment Band then gave a large evening ball with twenty numbers, praised by guests, as society’s leading members attended across Sedalia.

Second Regiment Ball Delights Dancers At Liberty Park

The Second Regiment band held its second annual ball at Liberty Park on Tuesday night. Despite inclement weather a large crowd attended with about 75 couples in the grand march. The hall was decorated with evergreens bunting and numerous incandescent lights. The twenty piece band played from the west end and provided music from the grand march to the early morning final number.

Strangled to Death J L Craft Executed in Jail Yard

Jefferson City January 21 J L Craft was hanged for murdering farmer boy Herman Spieker. The drop occurred at 9 02 am and death came twenty minutes later from strangulation. The execution was bungling with rope slipping and witnesses numbered about fifty. Craft had previously been a state pen convict and shot the boy while he tried to block Craft during an escape attempt.

City Council Reaches Hydrant Agreement With Water Works

After a 7:40 pm session the council and water works officials agreed city pays 45 yearly for fire hydrants with a 10 percent rebate for prompt payment. Water pressure must be maintained at 40 pounds with daily forfeits for shortfalls, saving city over 2800 yearly. Also notes street railway contract and other financial items discussed.

Fire at Knob Noster destroys several business blocks

Destructive blaze at Knob Noster this morning around 2 o'clock leveled three two story brick business houses including a hardware store owned by John Foster. Losses exceed ten thousand dollars with partial insurance. names affected include J C Metts Dr C V Huff and the Gillum estate. The Bank of Knob Noster and others suffer considerable damage.

Missouri Nate League to Form Eight City Baseball Circuit

Sedalia is named to join a planned Missouri State League for 1902 with eight to ten cities. A February 19 meeting at Mitchell Hotel in Nevada will elect officers and set schedules for a May to October season, with salary limits and travel arrangements.

Miss Pearl Baird hosted a linen shower this afternoon for Miss Alice Miner, announced to wed John McLaughlin Jr on January 29. At yesterday’s Sorosis meeting Mrs. Querle read Dr Johnson His Life and Works and led a discussion on Rasselas as Johnson’s greatest work.

Bowers Named Oil Inspector for Sedalia

Jefferson City January 21 Governor Dockery appointed Joseph Bowers oil inspector for the city of Sedalia. He will succeed John W Baldwin whose term expires tomorrow. Several applicants sought the post including Baldwin Dr McClure H R Camp John W Burress D M Overstreet C B Rodes and John L Hall.
