Masked men assaulted and bound the Joplyn family in Toledo, seeking twenty thousand dollars from a recent oil deal. They bound a seventeen month old child and tortured Christian Joplyn, pressuring him to reveal funds. His condition is critical and he may die.
Albert Knapp, returned from Indianapolis, faces first degree murder charges for killing two former wives and confessing to five total murders. He described motive as lust and said a desire to kill overwhelmed him, with victims in Cincinnati and Hamilton, Ohio, and Indianapolis. His family questions his sanity.
Judge Truxel sentences four railroad workers John Murray James Burns William Burt and Ed Ryan in police court this morning. Each man is fined five dollars plus costs and ordered to leave town on a stay.
A February New York blaze at the Carhart Clothing building caused $250000 in damage. Fire Captain Andreis died after falling on the sixth floor as nine firemen were trapped by debris but later rescued with injuries. others escaped amid dramatic ladder rescues.
A morning blaze in Cincinnati started in the Pike opera house basement and swept through a large building and adjoining offices. About one million dollars in losses, with 100 offices and a dozen firms burned. Amatuer actor W J Jones was rescued after collapsing while trying to save his wardrobe. The Sword of the King company and costumes were destroyed ending the tour.
In circuit court a jury returned a verdict for the defendants in Nob Blair versus D A Fults et al, suit on account. Blair claimed wages for keeping the official score at Sedalia baseball games last season, but the non payment claim failed.
Mr J F Sims of Concordia Kansas arrives to take over as superintendent of the Western division of the Missouri Pacific, succeeding J A Foley whose resignation was announced yesterday. Foley plans Wichita residence and awaits reassignment as the Kansas City Mexico and Orient line grows, with headquarters moving as needed. Foley will direct initial operations and organize service as construction progresses.
William F. Boekenkamp aged 84 died at his niece Mrs. Jacob Miller’s Camp Branch home from senile debility. Born in Germany he lived in America many years and spent the last nine with relatives. Funeral plans shift toward California with body to be shipped and Rev Bunnbeecht may conduct services if well.
New York traders saw Frisco stocks fall after an unverified rumor that Rock Island might acquire Frisco. The common declined about one percent, with further losses near one point as extreme Frisco declines reached two and a half percent while the first preferred rose two percent.
