Andrew Carnegie deeded his million and a half in New York to his daughter Margaret Carnegie. He will travel to America to present the gift on Christmas day as the child plans a party for friends.
The body of former House Speaker Thomas B. Reed arrived in Somerville from Washington on a special train. The transfer to Portland tracks occurred this morning for Reed’s burial set for tomorrow. His widow Mrs Reed, daughter Katherine, and successor Representative Allen accompanied the funeral party.
Senator Hanna presides as New York hosts the Civic Federation opening. Speakers include Harvard’s Eliot Adams Ireland and Strauss. John Mitchell arrives. topics cover restriction of output joint trade agreements hours of labor arbitration and conciliation limits. Mayor Low welcomes. Alfred Mosely delivers a strong address.
C. F. Peabody a prosperous Clarence farmer who bought a farm near Smithton Iowa is in town awaiting three car loads of household goods farm implements and some stock en route from his Iowa home to Pettis county. His 16 year old son will manage the stock. Mr Peabody left this morning by train for Smithton.
A major blaze in Cheyenne Wyoming today destroyed the large opera house owned by Senator Carr. The $100,000 building was swept by fire with the cause still unknown.
Manager Leroy J. French promotes the popular farce Peck's Bad Boy at the Opera House and emphasizes casting the right actors to sustain laughs and long running success.
Manager Wood confirms Lewis Morrison will appear as Mephisto in the new Faust production at the Opera House on Thursday December 11. The same week Lovers Lane by Cladge Fitch draws strong box office interest with a first rate company and top tier scenery and costumes promised.
The Rev. F. L. Powell pastor of East Sedalia Baptist church presented a paper titled Dogmatism of Christianity at the Ministers Alliance meeting this morning.
Philadelphia report says Barry Johnstone died at Hahnemann hospital from peritonitis after shooting Kate Hassett last Monday. He died as sisters and brothers were at his bedside. burial planned in Syracuse. Hassett was wife of Chicago businessman Everett Beckwith. Hassett parents live in Aurora Illinois.
The Sedalia lodge of Elks held memorial services at Calvary Episcopal Church with about one hundred members present. The Sedalia Military band led a procession from the lodge hall, Exalted Ruler W D Steele presided, and Judge George F Longan and Rev W T Allan offered tributes to Frank Kennedy and Ira Hinsdale and spoke on Elks virtues.
Funeral services for Dr. E. C. Evans were held at Broad Way Presbyterian Church at 10 30 yesterday morning with Rev E W Clippinger officiating. Friends and relatives filled the church to pay last respects to the physician known citywide for his moral and Christian conduct and lifetime of service. Pallbearers were the same as in Sunday’s Sentinel.
Admiral Rodgers en route from San Francisco to New York visits his brother in Kansas City today while heading to take charge of the Brooklyn navy yard.
Oliver Wendell Holmes took the oath of office today as Justice of the United States Supreme Court in Washington. The ceremony marked his official start on the high court bench.
A Nebraska City dispatch reports the Missouri River abruptly altered its course on Friday night, leaving the city three miles from the water. The Burlington bridge risked being stranded, but heavy stone embankments saved it as a vast flat formed between town and current. Crews work to lay new intake pipes to the waterworks.
Judge Berry dismissed the case against Charles Hoffman on motion by the prosecutor for theft from Will Menefee. No charges remain.
